I need some advice on the proper quenchant for 1095 and 9260. I'm sure this has been asked a bunch of times but I could not find and cut and dry answer (probably because there isn't one).

Anyway, I have gallons of pomace olive oil that my mom uses for making soap. I was wondering how this would work. I also have access to many different machine oils like lathe/mill oil, EDM oil, and many others.

Thanks alot for the advice.

Happy Easter

Hi,
I use a mixture of about 60% mineral oil with 40% transmission fluid for both 1095 and O-1. I warm it up a little before I begin hardening. I have never had a problem with this formula and it is pretty resistant to flaring up.

Good Luck,
Jack

For 1095, I use water or Brine. Just need to make sure you do a couple of normalizing cycles to eliminate any stress in the steel first.

Heat treating the steel at about 1,500 and quench in Motor Oil with the oil at 125 -130. Then temper at 350-400 for 2 hours. That is with 1095. It work great here in my shop. But I use other steel as well as in 1084 - 52100. It something you will need to work with. There always someone in here to help you on your way. I hope this was of help to you. Have a great day and good luck. -------------------

The olive oil should be fine for 1095 if warmed to about 120 F. I use a mix of whatever used cooking oil I can get for 1095. As to the 9260, I don't know, never used it.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I think I'll try olive oil for both. Admiral is weird for selling 9260 in place of the 5160.
