Heat treating 1095 , then what?

I'm going to oil quench some 1095, but after that should I temper the blade at 400 degrees or so ?
If so how long ?

The time depends on the size and thickness of the knife, but in general you want the blade to have turned a light straw yellow color.

Yes!
Are you using a regular oven or toaster oven ?
With a toaster oven I'll be much easier to monitor the color. It's also easier to see if the steel is pretty bright and clean.

There is good info in the stickys on HT.

1095 needs to be austenitized at 1475F and held for 10 minutes at that temp. Then it is quenched in fast oil. immediately after the quench and subsequent cooling to room temperature it should be tempered at 400F in an oven. Temper for one hour, remove and cool off in running water, then put back in the oven for a second one hour temper.
