i've seen several references to using some sort of foil during the heat treat and i was wondering what is it and what does it do? is this something that i would need to have to properly heat treat 440-C or ATS34

Just to give you the information: it is a sort of stainless steel foil used by professional heat treaters when working with finished i.e. polished blanks. It gives the maker the opportunity to finish his blades completely while soft. It is thin enough to let the heat pass (in both directions - quenching) but thick enough to protect the blade from oxydation while heating it in a normal heat treating oven without inert gas protection.

I use foil on stainless and on carbon. Stainless is a no brainer. Just wrap the part and follow instructions for heat treat

As for carbon I make a pouch spray wd 40 in .(Just a little..) Then make a pull wire for the folder blade and put it through the pivot.
Then fold the top of the pouch over just enough to keep the interior in an oxygen free atmosphere. When Im ready to quench the blade I have two pair of pliers. I pull out the bag with the pull wire sticking out and grab the opposite end and wire with the pliers. Yank the blade out and quench it. This keeps the blade almost scale free. It allows me to grind close to size before heat treat..
