Tomorrow Im gonna put together a Don fogg heat treating forge to get more precise heats and the ability to see just how hot the forge is getting, Now I asked a couple of my local Makers about thermocouples and pyrometers and got great information but I forgot it all. I was wondering if you guys could lend me alittle help in figuring out just what to get or what parts I would need to buy and from where, Thanks very much for your help. I dont have a clue what a pyrometer or a thermocouple looks like? Thanks again maybe if its posted on here I wont forget, lol Charlie

knife noob, I looked at all those threads, I still dont understand what the difference in a multimeter or pid is tho? Im trying to figure out what I need and how I would apply it into my forge.

See the thread on "Thermocouple and Multimeter".

There have been several good threads in the past where full plans for the control of a HT forge were given.

Fred Rowe had built one of my HT forge designs, as have several others. Soon there will be a new build thread on "The Ultimate Controller" and the associated forge hookup.

Try searches on PID controlled forge; Controlled forge; two stage controller; etc.

Email me if you need more info.

Stacy, how long before you think the Ultimate Controller will be ready to post?

Charlie- are you building an electric or gas? I'm not familiar with the "Fogg" version...

anyway, go to http://Auberins.com They have everything you need and are most helpful.

I would think you need a K type thermocouple, a PID controller. These will be your basic monitoring system components. This will give you single degree monitoring and perhaps control depending of how you set them up and how your HT oven works.

PM me if you want more info and you can call me.....

Charlie,

Go to the link Dennis posted above.

For a thermocouple, the Model WRNK-191 should meet your needs

For a good PID, the Model SYL-1612B should do it.

All you have to have for the PID to work will be an electrical cord to supply power (old extension cord, etc.)

Dennis........ the Fogg Style is like the "Up-right" that I have.

Which kind of PID is the type that will control a solenoid that will automatically reduce the gas flow in order to maintain a constant temp, instead of the "on/off" type of controller?
You guys know what I mean, right?
Thanks,
Mitch
