Does anyone have any advice on heat treating D2 Tool steel, Ramping Temperatures and what not.

Dimensions are approximately 1/4"x2"x11"

Trying to get an idea of what I'll need

Google Alpha Knife Supply. Click blade steel choose D2 read data sheet. This should point you in the right direction. Good luck. Lu

Do you know anything about ramping steel??

Printed out that data sheet btw it has me on the right track, I've got a kiln on payment plan so I've got the bulk cost of everything I need out of the way

I cant say anything about the exotic stainless steels but for the common stuff we use "ramp" means as fast as your oven will climb to the next temperature and stabilize

I use 440C so it goes, ramp to 1400 soak 10 minutes, then ramp to 1950 soak for 30 minutes and quench, I don't control the ramp speed as in degrees per minute

What kind of kiln? On the Evenheat kiln with the Rampmaster controller you can set the rate at which the temperature ramps up in degrees per hour (though I have only used the '9999' setting, which is as fast as possible). I wrap the D2 in stainless steel foil, then quench between quench plates. Leave the kiln door open while you are doing the quench so the kiln can cool down to tempering range. I'm not sure if others have sub-zero'd D2, but that might add some hardness...I haven't tried it.
