I was wondering, can you use a barbecue for heat treating? I wanted to normalize a knife but the only thing suitable for heating where I live is the bbq. I got the coals hot enough to melt glass and get steel red/orange. is that enough to normalize or quench a knife? thanks.

will a hair dryer work? I dont know what kind of steel it is but it was some off of an internet sword (cheep) but some websites that sell it say "stainless" some say "high carbon" I don't think its stainless because without oil it oxidizes bad.

A hairdryer will probably work. If you don't know what kind of steel it is, then it's going to be hard to HT it right, if at all. My guess is that it's junk steel if it's a cheapo novelty sword. Read this.. http://www.dfoggknives.com/hardening.htm

And anything else you can find. The newbie sticky here is the first thing you should read if you're interested in making knives.

You will probably want to look into a more controllable heat treating setup. You'll have no way to measure the heat in the bbq.
