Heat treating in electric oven?

Hey, guys. I have oven now, but I have to learn a lot about HT. I will use stainless steels like 420, 1.4116 for begining. So I have major question - what order do I HT? Maybe is an old question, sorry.:)

1. Put the blade in a cool oven (mine reaches 1050 for one hour), and than switch on, or...

2. Switch my oven, wait unthil it reach necesary temperature (1050C for 420 or other quenching temperature for other steel) and than put it in, wait two to three minutes until it heats, and than pull out and quench it.

Different steels have different heat treating requirements, including ramp and soak times. I'm sorry, I don't know for the steels you listed.

My question was principle, not for specific steels, but.
Ok, for example 440C-same question:
1.Put it in cool oven (that reaches the 1050 for one hour) or...
2.Put it in hot oven for minute or two -1050C and than quench.
What is better version of HT?

I know that ATS34 or so molybdenum steels needs pre-heat on 800C. For them can I put them into an oven that is heated to the point of pre-heat in 800C, and start the process from there?

Sorry, I should have answered in more detail. I have not had trouble starting from a cold or preheated oven. The important aspect is keeping the steel at a given ramp or soak temperature for the appropriate time.

HT newbie here too... isn't it best to put the blade in while the oven heats up, so they both come up to temp? Otherwise it seems you'd have a 1500F oven and a 75F blade and wouldn't get the soak time you think you are?

Or maybe I'm out-thinking myself again...
