what makes you think it needs to be heat treated? not all flint requires heat. if it is in fact in nodule form, it probably doesn't. what does it look like? black, or dark grey, with a white chalky cortex?

"the art of flint knapping" by D.C. Waldorf is one of the best books for a beginner.

If it is a large nodule and you want to split a blank off of it rather than shatter it.
Make a fire and put the rock next to the flames Not into[ indirect heat] when the rock is hot pull away from the fire and pour water over it.
It should split, do a practice run on an other stone first.
A way to temper flint was to bury it for a period of time this was because exposed stone was exposed to heat/cold one side.
If you want practice knapping cheap find an old toilet.

have you ever done this?, (the heat and water thing) or are you just telling him something that you saw on a YouTube vid? seriously, I'm not messing with you or trolling, I honestly want to know. Have you ever heated up a piece of flint in/on/near a fire and then poured water on it and popped off a spawl or slab???

my advice Normark is get the book i put in my post, its pretty cheap, and DC has forgotten more about flint knapping than any ten people on this forum.
before any one jumps my shit, anybody here that's read his books or met the man will tell you the same thing.
