I'm in the market for a heat treating oven for dual purposes. I want to do my knives (440C mainly) and also use it for my wife's enameling. I've been looking at Paragon KM14D and the HT-14D (at http://www.paragonweb.com/html/heat_treating_furnaces.html)
Any thoughts about these ovens? Others? Are there used ovens out there? If not, is it best to buy from Paragon or through some dealer? Thanks in advance.

I don't see anything on the web about Olymic or Olympic ovens... do you know where I might find info?

I have 2 Paragon ovens (9 and 14) that i have been using for years. Other than burning a coil out in the 14D several years ago, never had a problem with them.

Here in South Africa all the knifemakers who are not contracting their heat treatment out are making use of a tube furnace made by Custom Furnaces, selling for approx $700 if you pick it up yourself. The blade hangs in the oven, suspended from a hook in the lid, so there is no contact with shelves and the like causing hot spots. I use one myself with excellent results.

I have 2 Paragons. My first was an HT14D. I have added a second thermocouple and digital readout, and, that furnace is accurate to within 5 degrees at 1750F. Impressive
So, I just purchased a KM36D, so I could do Wakasashi's. The first time I fired it, the element broke, and I have to disassemble the whole top to replace it. Also, there was a problem with the controller. However, the folks at Paragon handled both of these problems QUICKLY and EFFECTIVELY. The way these things get bounced around during shipment, problems like this are not surprising.

The digital controller is great-easy to use, and accurate, although you should ceck it at various temperatures before you get serious.

I'll be building a HT oven off of the plans I purchased from Meta Machines (406-862-4868, just in case somebody wants the #)in the next month or so, as time permits. Plans seem pretty straighforward, and should cost less than half of what a Paragon or similar type oven. FWIW, I'll let the group know how this project works out once it's completed.
(And no, I don't have any connections to Meta).

Hey Harry I was going to build one, but I could do it for less then what Paragon charges. The controller the dtc-800 was going to cost me ~$500, so there is $500 and not even started buying the heating elements or anything else.

So how are you doing it? either you got a real cheap source for the controllers or you are using a cheaper controller. Which is it?

Meta offers controllers at a pretty reasonable price also, along with contact wheels for grinders. Give him a call, he's a good guy.
