i'm making a batch of marlinspikes (sailing tools) out of 440c and i was wondering if anyone would have some insight as to what hardness to shoot for? i've been doing some looking and can't seem to find a decent answer.

Since it doesn't need to hold a edge and it's used for prying I would tempered it back quite a bit. Maybe around 500f. I not to familiar with 440c heat treat parameters though.

thanks for the help!

any idea what rc number? i will be sending these to peter's heat treat with a batch knives.

Call Brad and tell him what you want them to do and ask him. He does this all day long.

At 800F, you should get Rc 55-56.
