Heat Treating service

that's great
I had been thinking about doing the same for laminated hitachi steels that I make
I had written up the details for a post and just didn't bother following thru.
I'll just stick to the one or two steels I know.

I might post in services offered.... :-)

When I worked for NASA the Met Lab did all the heat treat for the machine shop and my carpool partner ran the Met Lab so I tapped his brain for HT knowledge and they ran all the Stainless parts through with Nitrogen purge in their furnaces. When I got ready to convert I checked out the setup in the lab and it was so simple I can't believe I had not done it sooner.

I have a DIY furnace pid controlled with thermocouple. I ran a 1/8" copper tube through the soft brick on the bottom corner of the furnace and sealed the tube with high temp caulking. The tube extends into the furnace about 1/2" and I put a piece of soft firebrick in front of the tube to help disperse the gas. I flood my furnace with gas before I open the door to put the blades in (rough estimate is like 5 times the volume of the chamber for the flood gas) once I close the door I let it run a minute or two and lower the flow to 10 SCFH (gas is measured in cubic feet per hour) for the remainder of the HT cycle. The volume of Nitrogen gas is so low you don't need a special hood or venting unless you're doing it in a closet.

Thanks for the information, I'm defently going to do this now.
When I first designed this oven that was the plan to do nitrogen shealding. Then I researched it and it seemed like it was a meh kinda thing so I passed it over. But hearing your positive experance has re sparked the fire, thank you. It will make heat treating much easier and provide better quality for my customers.

Best of Luck with your New Enterprise!

Wanted to update the thread and say I got the knives back "lickety-split". Here's to hoping I don't mess up JT's great work on the homestretch :)

I'm glad you got the blades, hope to see how thy come out.

Just great for me as I have some plans for blades after the new year. This is a great opportunity.

This is great I really hope this works out for you!

So I was just thinking it would be pretty cool to buy some of your thinner 15n20 pre-heat treated in 2in x 10-12 in pieces. I would be willing to pay pretty well for that after I staighten out my finances

JT. Want to talk to you about HT for this one I'm making for the kith.

Would love to heat treat that blade for you.

Funny you bring this up, I was actually thinking about this over the last few months. What I do is grind after heat treating so profiling would not be to bad.

Hey JT, what's the best way to get in contact with you regarding HT?

Best way is to email me, some times I will read your email but not have time to respond and forget to respond so if you don't hear from me in a few days email me again. My email is JTcustomKnives(at)gmail.com

lol nice. yeah the profiling would be the worst part as most of us are already used to grinding bevels without overheating. But when profiling i just want to hog into it. The other thing is we (as the customer) would have to draw the handle back enough to drill. But thats not really a big deal.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. If you do end up doing the pre-heat treated stock you should shoot me a pm i have a couple of ideas you might want to implement.

Will you do a sword? Say 40" overall?

I don't want to try the HT myself again after my cutlass. Not until I'm better setup for it. But I'm going to have a viking sword blade I'll need to send somewhere soon.

I'm not sure on a sword, defently not that size. My oven is only 32" inside length. I have enough stress heat treating my last sword don't know if I would do customers swords yet.
