I was told you could heat treat oil hardening steel with a torch. What type of torch works best? Can I use a canister propane torch (cylinder type) from the hardware store? I already know how to temper with a torch.

Can you heat treat with a torch? Absolutely, it takes skill and practice, but you will be able to do it your way and in time push your steel to the limit of your ability. Do a search or buy my books or Video or DVD and you will know how I do it, then make it your way.

Thanks Ed, would it happen to be in your first Knife Talk book?

You are quite welcome. Yes it is there, or as much as I could express at the time. The art never quits growing, the frontier will out live me and those who read our words.

I have heat treated many hundreds of blades with a oxy/acetylene torch for the quench but always use an oven for tempering. Like Ed said it takes alot of practice but works very well.
