Heat treating

Since he didn't ask me to supervise, he either thinks he can do it or would be too embarrassed to have a witness !!

Joe lives next to the funny farm so he has his work blessed by them !

You'll be fine as long as you sacrifice a chicken and swing it over your head while chanting no warp no cracks and then immeadiatley quench into urine of a virgin redhead.Good luck:D

Chickens I can find easily... legal-age virgin redheads... not so sure about that!

Sam,
Make sure that your blade is aligned with the magnetic poles of
the earth. EVERYBODY knows this is the most crucial factor in
heat treating.:D

Thanks for the ......uh.......kind words guys :D

HT went good, had to do each sword twice, both times from warpage.

Robert, ummmm....the too embarrassed one honest.

There is no luck involved in heat treating :p

There is lots of luck, but the only luck we notice is the bad luck. Heat treat is another one of those sciences that involves a certain amount of art to get the science right.

I'll bet even Kevin has never done the stoichiometry to determine how much single malt scotch is required to eat up all the oxygen in a foil envelope before the steel starts showing oxides. (I love little traces of blue. It means I got so close withoiut being wasteful) :D

Rob!

edited to add: Oh geeze - now my secret is out! :(

Did you hold a brass chain over your quench tank on the second try? I won't quench unless the chain swings clockwise over the quench tank :p

No I just screamed and cursed for about 5 minutes wondering how it warped width wise turning a straight double edge into a double edge katana, had a smoke, then heated it up again and hit it with the hammer and things worked out :D .

Rob beat me to it.
If a smith quenches a blade and it warps - it is bad luck.
If he quenches a blade and it is dead straight - it is skill.

 No I certainly have not! Unless it was to about how much single malt went into me to achieve the same effect. To put it in the envelope I would just use a damned blended scotch.

Both times Mcahron. Both times they warped like noodles also, but both I was able to adjust while still warm.

Hey Sam, was one of those blades damascus by chance? :)

-d

Oh no, not touching that bar yet :D........ After these swords are done it is power hammer time, then I have one more commission to get out of the way then I can play for a bit :D
