This is not because of any mental ability problem, it is a safety factor. While removing your gloves for simple calculations is OK, it is unsafe to take your shoes off when doing higher math in the smithy.
Timing things, like a 5 minute soak time, is not a problem, as every blacksmith knows that it takes right at two minutes to finish off a beer,,,,so when you are half way through a six pack, it is time to quench 1095 ( see, they even understand fractions). O-1 takes a whole six pack.

Please don't think I am a Blacksmith bigot. I know lots of blacksmiths, and they are all nice people. I have even had some over to my house. They are just like everyone else. It's not their fault they were born blacksmiths.

How much beer do I have to drink to get through S30V heat treat? Is it cheating if you have friends help you so you don't pass out with blades still in the oven?

Is PBR a superior quenchant or should I go with Bud Light?
 
You can quench steel at 1300f in cougar urine and get a great hamon even in stainless super steels, has to be a red headed cougar for stainless though.
 
S30V is a stainless steel. Every blacksmith knows that the HT for stainless is much different. It takes two people to time it properly.
This is done by passing a pint bottle of Jack Daniels back and forth until it is empty . That takes about 20-30 minutes....which is just about right for S30V.

Sam demonstrates this type of HT regularly. I believe he was taught the procedure by IG.
