Heating quench tank?

So I'm wondering a couple things: first, is it best to quench 5160 sideways or blade tip first? And if it's sideways, can I just heat it to 160 in the oven? Say keep it there for a couple hours to ensure it's all heated.

Heat treat temp of 5160 is 1550f iirc. Your oven is not appropriate for heat treat (unless this is a typo and you are referring to a kiln).

We're talking about the temp of your quenching oil right? I took an old kingpin from a pickup truck, welded a metal rod to it, and heat it red hot in the forge. Then i immerse it in the quenching oil until I get the temp I want and then pull it back out. Easy.

I prefer vertical, but I don't edge quench anything. I have used a Bayou Classic turkey fryer pot from HD for years and just bought a surplus 120mm mortar round can for longer blades. You are limited to about 11 inches with the fryer setup unless you want to have oil leaking out around the handle rivets. The "good" news is that the fryer setup obviously comes with its own heater setup if you dare to use it.

I use a mortar can with a immersion heater. It's very fast.

I also recently installed a pid controller to get more accurate temp control.

Quench tip down or edge down . Never side down as that will warp the blade !!! You also should agitate , moving the blade edge to spine . Much of heating is for getting better fluidity for going through pumps etc.
130-140 F should be enough.
