Heaven, manifested in shop form

No way. Too intimidating.

Seriously though. I could sit in a chair and absorb that kind of atmosphere for the rest of my life. Right now I might even be able to imagine the smell.

God. (Drooling.) I love that Hackney air hammer. The only working one in existence! The line shafting on everything is GREAT. That must take some serious work to setup and maintain.

Thanks for the pics Sam. That place is something else. Do you know what powers the main line shaft? Is is powered by a fast moving creek?

He says of the 250 lb. Murray that "This is the only machine in the shop that makes the Reid snort." Reid, like probably the OLD style 2 cycle natural gas engine that was common in oilfield use...

Click on the "Studio" link and then the picture labeled "Engine Room" to see the power sources.

I've loved this shop since Sam first posted a link to it several years ago.

Wonder if he gives tours?

I just got sidetracked into reading his paper on rebuilding and tuning a 15hp Reid engine for line shaft duty. This guy is frickin' competent. What a great site. Thanks Sam. Have you been there? If not, I'd imagine it's a matter of time!

Making big swords in the old days ?? Actually a nice photo of Santa Fe RR shop ,1943

Nice picture. Those double frame steam hammers are crazy. I've been reading Anvils In America, there are some good heavy forging pics in there as well.

I see that shop and have not only machine envy, but energy envy and intellect envy...

Thanks for posting Sam!
Not sure where he is in Michigan but I'd sure like to visit :D
