Heavy duty folder suggestions please?

Greco is making his folders again, check the revamped site. Thinking about getting one myself, just wish I had taken the chance to get one a few years ago when they were $50.
 
Since no one else has mentioned it I will....an Al Mar SERE. It's a liner lock but a hell of a folder...very stout. It usually gets rave reviews from most folks. My only complaint....it sits a little heavy in the pocket for every day carry. The Buck Tarani looks nice but I seem to recall they only come partially serrated. Not my thing for civilian EDC. I would also probably look hard at a Spyderco Manx and Paramilitary...or for that matter just go the bargin route and go with an Endura...hell as an EDC I have done unGodly things to it and it still is fine.

imho the 2 most heavy duty folders are striders (not buck striders) and extrema ratio, without a doubt. they are a totally diff class than a spyderco chinook, manix, etc.

they arent cheap, but they are very HD, cant imagine either 1 failing ya.
 
You're totally right about Strider being in a totally different class. I hear all the time the Strider compared to the Manix. I compared the two side by side and found that the latter doesn't even come close.

Here are the 3 criteria that all folders have in common. I suggest comparison of these criteria in general. Not Striders in particular. See which one comes out on top. This test is just a non biased one of knife components:

Pivot diameter. (What's easier to break? A pin sized pivot or a large pivot?)

Lock thickness (be that a frame lock or liner lock) (What flexes more? A thick piece of metal or a thin one?)

blade thickness (What's harder to break? A thick piece of metal or a thin one?)

I carry my Strider in places where a fixed just isn't allowed. It's the next best thing to a fixed blade and if I was in the wilderness and had only 1 folder to take and no option for a fixed, the Strider would be the one.
