Ok guy's...my Anniversary is comming up in a few weeks & the wife is going to get me a knife ! I just gave her a new Canon compact DVD recorder:D So I'm good to go:thumbup: What I'm looking for is a tough as nails no-nonsense fixedblade around $200 or less (prefer less:D) I'm currently looking at -
1. RAT Cutlery RC5
2. KA-BAR/Becker BK-2
3. Ontario Ranger RD-7 or RAK
What else & if anybody already has these tell me more ! Or any other makers that I'm leaving out .
So far 'm leaning towards the RC5 but the BK 2 is a close second for me & only about half the price.

Fallkniven s1 forest knife....you'll never need another blade if you are in to the larger fixed blades.

Another vote for the Fällkniven, They very well epidomize the survival knife concept IMO. I would avoid the coated ones though, their coating wears off really quick then you get some nasty looking partially coated affair that in unpleasant to behold. The S1 is really thick, but the grind is so well done that it is still really sharp.

For $200 (or much less) you can get customs from most of the knifemakers around here. JK made me some big tough ones for $130-150. I have a big Laconico for $190.

Why limit yourself, go custom.
You can get more for about the same money and have it made for you.
WOW, deja vous all over again!

don't know the thickness but it is a laminated vg10..it is close indestructable. it also it comes in a plain satin finish.

I have two Camillus Becker BK-2's which i love.
Great Knives!
The RC-5 looks great too though.

Out of what you've listed, I can only speak about the Becker BK-2. This is a really, really solid, well built knife. It's well made, and virtually indestructible. It's not the lightest knife in the world but, if I read you right, that's not the primary consideration; toughness is. The Grivory scales on the BK-2 are the most comfortable of any I've ever used, and you can now get them in micarta, too. It also cost far less than the RAT Cutlery RC5. If I had to make a second choice, it would be the RAT Cutlery RC5, which I believe has a better sheath. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these knives if you're looking for a tough, no nonsense knife. Personally, I'm partial to heavy duty knives like the BK-2 (just in case I ever have to dismantle a tank).

I've got several customs from some fellow BF guy's. I've got 3 Breedens, 3 koyotes, 1 Landi, 1 Reeder. I realy like my customs but I'm lookig for real Tank..RC's warranty is AWSOME ! Thats what is got me leaning towards the RC5. I don't know what kinda warranty Bryan offers but his Peace maker I have (6" blade) looks to be a real tough knife.

You need a Gossman Tusker or better yet the JK John has for 135 bucks right now. That sucker looks like a beast!

I would take the RD-7 and prefer to find one on the secondary market that was made by Justin. Not on your list is the camp knife that John of JK Knives makes.

How about a Fiddleback Hunter? I just got one (getting another with slightly thicker scales), but the work is phenomenal. Falls in your price range. It is very light in the hand, but it's got enough meat that I'd never worry about failure!

I'd put JK's Knives against any others out there, they can take one serious beating and are in it for the long haul !!!!

I'd also recommend ML knives although I think his thicker knives in that size range would be outta that price range....just checked his site and I may be wrong with that so it would be worth giving him a call !

Also check out the exchange for Scrapyard knives !

I agree with your opinion of JK's knives.
I have read a lot of your post but have never seen anything about Ranger Knives, do you own any? I have a few and would be glad to loan you one to "play with' if you want.

No doubt what so ever, Get a custom from one of the fine Makers right here, JK, Breeden, DPK, Koyote or one of the others, these I have several of. You won't regret it. The factory stuff is fine but for a special occasion, you need a custom.:D. IMO
