Heavy Duty Survival knife

Another vote for a Fallkniven S1

Blade thickness has NOTHING to do with how tough a knife is. If you buy custom make sure that their idea of "use and abuse" is the same as your idea of use and abuse. I would also ask if they have actually tested a knife with their steel and heat treat to destruction to see how tough it actually is or not before I would trust what they had to say about how hard core their knives are, if you really want a knife you do not have to worry about.

I'm a big fan of Fallkniven too, but not so much their handles, for more contoured handles with tough as nails blades I'd also recommend the BR Bravo-1 or Bravo-2 if you want more blade length.

If you want another tough steel, look at the Bark River Lil Canadian or maybe the Fehrman knives in CPM3V. Everything I have read about this steel sounds amazing. I just ordered a Lil Canadian.

All these things apply even more so with productions - who like to hype stuff up for big advertising budgets :p

Hi all,

Stomper, thanks. I am getting ready to take that same design and and make a 8" 3/32" thick dedicated Kitchen knife for me. Water mellons and big heads of lettuce and cabbage, some of the squash from the garden are freaking huge this year LOL.

M You make apoint the toughness part. The heatreat is the KEY to any (knifes performace,) then the steel used to make the knife.

Again tell the knife maker what you plan to do with the knife you want made up.

Then that will help you and the knife maker get things squared away between the 2 of you.

Destrucion tests are just that when you bend a blade what do you have a bent blade.
Thicker steel will not bend as easy as thinner steel will. that is a no brainer.

That is one thing you really get to do with a custome maker over the production knives.

I gotta say, for production knives, Becker BK-2 is a beast, RC-6, or even the Ontario TAK-1. No nonsense blade, for customs, I would take a Gossman Tusker or Kephart everytime.

+1 KGD You can probably count on the fingers of one hand how many production companies make a true hard use knife, and have some left over, especially the companies that will stand behind their knives being used hard.

If it were me I would call BB because I am extremely interested in the Warthorn design and I would discuss with him about what I was looking for in a knife and what I expected it to be able to take and see if he wanted to build a knife that could be used like that for the money I had to spend, but you might be looking for a different design. If I were looking for a production I would probably be interested in the SwampRats, used or for trade if I didn't want to pay for new, but there again you need to ask questions to see if it would do what you want it to do.

I'd go with the Bravo-1 or the Scrapper5 LE. Both are tough users and have great warranties.

Also if you don't like either one you can always sell it on and not have to worry about taking too much of a loss if any.

what about Ontario Rtak II?
or the SP-10 marine raider from the same brand?
Ka-bar heavy Bowie is a tuff enuff one too
good large wilderness knives for less than 100 bucks. Cold Steel Trail Master in Carbon 5 could be too, even when nowdays theyre ALMOST as expensive as the san mai III version, thanks to the good man of Nutnfancy.Yeah, love him or hate him but that man nowdays is almost the God of the Survival/tactical Knife Market. He decides who goes to hell or heaven, thanks to his allmighty Youtube channel.
I dont know if you are that much into large survival blades
if you dont, look to some scandinavian bushcraft knives like puukkos or any scandi-edged knife in some High carbon Steel cause theyre useful and easy to re-sharpen. Theyre a lot for less than 200. Brusletto, Helle, etc. Fallkniven is also a good choice but theyre not as strong as its said. I have a A2 and it always get little dents with 3 or 4 days of camping, with some woodwork. For me there is nothing as a good Busse, but obviously, they charge a lot more of money.
Large Survival blades will give you a lot of chopping/spliting capabilities, but they are not so good for fine carving and theyre of course heavier.
Medium/small blades are perfect for carving, food preparing and other specific tasks but theyre not good for making wood for fire or building shelters or stuff like that, so you will need other tools like hatchets or saws.
Well, thats just my own vision. Hope it can works for you.
Now, if i have 200 to spend on a new knife, i think i would go custom! i think as many more here that JK will give you a great value.Good Luck

a big YES to Yoz´s Friend!
i dont know why i didnt mention Scrapyards and Swamp Rats!
they are the strongest on that price range, BUT, maybe you wont like their designs for an aniversary gift! They have a philosophy of "performance first" so they look pretty much like kitchen knives.

I have an RC5 and really like it, and it is definitely a beast of a knife. From what I understand, Fallkniven makes great knives too. I am sure I will probably pick one up in the not too distant future.

I might get the "LOBO" From John (Stomper):D What do you all think ? I was also looking at the Scout by Stomper. I also checked into a Landi MPX . What do you guys think? Anybody have these models & can Show & Tell ?

Back in the old country, I used to buy some really el cheapo machetes with the intent of them being disposable - however they seem to stick around longer than you'd want them. As a result, the sharpening stone always came along for trips / work.

Something handmade from a rough cut of S30V+ with a 12 - 16" edge would be nice.

That's a nice lookin' design. I like that Border Patrol type handle he's got going there. I've got a couple of John's knives and really like 'em. Sounds like a winner to me.

You beat me to the punch: I was about to post in this thread, to chastise you for the sin of not following-up with your decision! That's not allowed at WSS of course.

I do like the look of the LOBO, certainly a beefy woods blade! Don't forget about that FB Hunter, either.

Here are some photos that Wildewinds posted of his Lobo, which he designed. Hopefully he will see this and tell more.
