There is a lot of talk about lightweight knives.

Personally, I like a heavy knife. I find the weight confidence-inspiring.

If anybody out there has a "pocket brick", I'd like to see some photos. I haven't really felt the "need" to buy a new knife for about five months, and I'm starting to get worried! :p

what do you consider a brick? my normal rotation consists of folders between 1-5oz. i have a few in the 9-10oz range i consider bricks and rarely see pocket time....

I prefer traditional folders.

All depends on what you consider heavy like wilsonj said.

I typically look at it as blade length to weight for if it's too heavy. I have some around 3.75 inches and up that are over 5 oz that aren't too heavy but some that are right around 3 inches that are close to the 5 oz mark.

I'll take the longer blade and added weight than the shorter blade just to save a few extra ounces.

The term "heavy" is very relative.

Some people won't carry anything over 3 ounces....

There's much more to consider when deciding what to carry then just weight, I have had what many would consider a "heavy" knife ride great in my pocket and feel light and vice versa.

Figure out what you need and why, and go from there. I doubt weight would be the logical first criteria....

I own some very heavy knives and have found I rarely carry them. If I'm wearing jeans I usually carry something that weighs ~4oz, occasionally I'll carry some 5oz pocket anchor. Knives that are 6+oz I basically never carry, they're just toys I have no good explanation for. If I have to wear lighter clothing (e.g. dress pants, athletic shorts, etc.) I usually carry something even lighter, staying closer to ~2oz.

In all seriousness, I don't really have an issue with weight. It really only matters to me on traditional knives, since heavier blades tend to fall sideways in my pocket and drive me nuts!!!

Oh. Uh. :foot:

Right. Frame of reference.

7 oz., and up, for a start. That's the weight if the heaviest knives currently in my collection.

The term "heavy" is very relative.

I always use pocket clips in my tight jeans and therefore I never feel the weight. My folders range from the Spyderco PM2 on the smallest end to Spyderco Manix 2 XL on the biggest end. None of these is particularly heavy although in use I feel the difference between the PM2 and the Manix 2. Even though it should not make any difference I still like the medium weight of the PM2.

At one point I was buying larger and heavier knives and wondered what my limit would be. Then I bought a ZT 0200 I found my limit. Its handle was a big fatter than what I wanted to carry and it felt too heavy. I think clipped in my pocket I couldn't feel the weight but I still thought it was too heavy. I have a Spyderco Vallotton and a Spyderco Bradley 1, and these are a bit heavier than average for me. I guess they are at the upper limit of what I'm happy with.

For the most part I like a solid knife with some weight to it.

Right now the Chaves Redencion 228 has my attention and it appears to be a tank of a knife. Right up my alley.

I can't stand big bulky pocket bricks, the biggest heaviest thing I'll carry in my pocket is my phone and that's only because I don't feel like finding a belt case for it.
My buck 110 is the biggest folder I'd ever edc and it came with a nice piece of leather.
