Heavy Ordanance? Corrugated Bevels?

I really dont get why anyone would want a 9-10" blade to be anything over 1/4" stock. Any thicker and its just extra weight to lug around.

Personally Id like to see a 3/16" FBM.

the difference between 1/4" and 3/8" is pretty large in terms of chopping ability.

my best chopping blade is a 1/2" 20" siru from HI. it makes the HOGFBM 3/8" thick look slim by compairison. i also have a 9/16" thick bhutan sword from HI that makes it look even slimmer. again, better choppers then any thing else i have.

i like my choppers to be 1/2" thick. and to be honest, i like it when their thicker then that, but its really hard to find any beyond that.

my 9/16" thick bhutan swords from HI is one of my favorite choppers because of its heft...

Have you carried these 3/8" and 1/2" thick monsters for 3-7 days hiking out in the wilderness? If you are willing to carry that combined with a pack/tent/water/sleeping bag and maybe a gun, then you are a bigger man then I, or crazier :)

Im not saying a huge fat FBM wouldnt be cool, Im just hoping for a 1/4" or better yet 3/16" version that I can take instead of a hatchet for long adventures lasting up to a week.

my pants weight 12 pounds. sounds rediculous, but with my wallet and chain, can of wd40, cell phone, surefire g2 flash light with 5 pack of batteries, my 2 led flashlights (one red one white) and bic lighter, my ground down NICK on my right hip with my HOGSJTACLE on my left, my leatherman charge on my right, and my monocular on my left hip, my 15 feet of paracord wrapped in a hojo bundle next to my measuring tape and 6 extra large jumbo sized zipties, my pen, marker and pencil sitting next to my box cutter and chapstick, along with my little notepad next to my keys -

weight doesnt mean the same thing to me that it does to other people. as long as i could put the knife at a point in my body where it rested on my legs rather then on my back, such as straped horizontally across my belt in the front so it went from hip to hip, i dont think i'd really notice the extra weight. the sweat from it resting against my stomach would bug the heck out of me, but thats just a fact of backpacking.

i also regularly wear a carhart sweatshirt that weighs 7 pounds with the crap i have in it (another leatherman, a crkt m1, a pair of black diamond dry ice gloves, a baklava and medical tape, as well as ace shin sleeves for when it gets cold). not the same as back packing with a 75lb pack, but i've done that as well. if i had a front horizontal sheath - i dont think it would have made a difference in how quickly i wore down. now, wether i could actually weild the thing after 3 days of hiking is another matter alltogether.

last time i did a 5 day hike i was a danger to myself with my little leathermans blade. ended up coating 2 walking sticks in blood while i was carving them. had to then cover then in soot to avoid scaring the other campers i was with... but a big part of that was that i thought for some reason that it was a good idea to only bring nuts and berry trailmix, and chocolate to eat. that was probably the worst mistake i could have made. pretty much 0 carbs for 5 days straight. it was a sucky week altogether...

if i was going back packing i would probably carry my basic 9 if i was going to carry a chopping knife at all. i've always found that to be the best of both worlds, light because of its hidden full tang but also quite blade heavy because of the same reason.

personally i'd like to see a 1/8" version... i've always been a fan of carry one extra thick and one extra thin.....

Wow! Now thats a prepared man!! :D
I thought i was bad...
So do you carry that stuff everywhere you go? Or just for certain events (campfires, hiking, camping... etc)?

The basic 9 just happens to be the 'big blade' that Ive gone with every time so far
Definitely my most used/carried larger knife.

i carry those items on my person at all times

i generally also have a pair of sunglasses, a licorice altoid tin (full of altoids :) ) and 5 disposable preservative free artificial tears vials on me.

in my car i have basically everything you could need to camp out for 3 or 4 days. a 24 pack of water botles, a crowbar/bolt cutter, 10 cans of random soups and refried beans as well as 20 packs of top ramen, a tool set, a bunch of coats, 1,000 feet of paracord and a bunch of other stuff i generally forget about, full set of clothes and shoes bleach and thigns like that. i think i have something like 5 swiss army knives stashed throughout the car...

heheheh, thats where the 1/2 case of individually wrapped sugar packages, freeze-dried malt, and ultra-thin airlock come in, you can just brew it yourself! :D

Just giving you grief SethMurdoc, good on you for taking the time to prep for anything!

one is what he's released for a long time, and i assume what he considers to be the best compromise of thickness, size, and geometry. the other (HOG versions) i cant help but think are around largely becuase of customer demand. i want the hog version, because i like the extra weight. but there are people here who would rather have a 3/16" version becuase they want something lighter. at that point you would like to have the strength of the 1/4" blade, but the weight of the 3/16" blade, wich is where weight reduction while maintaining or increasing strength comes in.

Has Jerry even posted the reason for going with the corrugated bevels? I guess I read something about weight savings but was weight really ever an issue? It doesn't make sense to me that on one hand you're worried about weight and then on the other you release HOG and LE versions that are really thick.

yes he has

"The grinds are so unique on the new AK-47 that we will soon have a patent pending on the process. We call it a “CC Bevel”. The CC Bevel is convex and allows us to offer the absolute accuracy and repeatability of CNC technology with greatly improved performance over traditional grinding methodologies. When compared to flat grinds or traditional hand ground convex blades out of the same material and heat treat, there is a marked increase in both strength and flexibility."

"This pic clearly shows our patent pending Corrugated Bevel Technology (CBT). The corrugated bevel not only greatly strengthens the blade but reduces the overall weight of the blade while reducing the cutting friction along the entire height of the bevel."

one of the links i'd like to see stickied in an "important threads you should read" thread... that along with the new production post, and the reason why things go slow post... or rather, have the information compiled into a "currently frequently asked questions" thread...

man... the heart attack - the 1/2" thick steel heart.... :D  :D

Hmmm. Good list, but I didn't see any "survival beer" anywhere. :D

i carry a 12 pack of soda in the trunk/back... one of the "luxury" items that can make all the difference in the world when you've been 2 or 3 days without normality. i bring soda on every camping trip i go on now because of it. calms the nerves....

same for a book (doesnt matter what of)...

I didn't see one of the most essential items...
Duct Tape! .. or an improved version - Gorilla Tape! :D
Do you carry a camera? (my Cybershot N1 or the T7 is almost always with me)
