heavy use folder: AlMar, Buck Strider, or ??

I'd consider the Buck Strider. I have the tanto point and the thing is a beast. Large liners with a prominent locking liner and thick G-10 slabs on the handles makes the thing great for use with gloved hands. The blade is thick but came shaving sharp out of the box. The only major hard use I've given the mine is whacking at some one to two inch thick branches. It worked fine. I feel as if I ever needed to ram a knife through a wall, the B/S strider would do the trick and come out great.

MANIX ! Received one a few days ago, looks of the most sturdy folders available. Although it is big and very sturdy it has a lower profile (sheeplewise) then the Buck/Strider.

It's definetly worrisome but IMO anything w/ more than one part is going to be prone to failing or developing play eventually. I honestly don't think the knife would have ever failed under SD or utility conditions BUT it's not a chance I wanted to take. I still think the S2K is a great product, I it carried every day for two years a lot of that time I was on Deployments w/ guy's who didn't bring the right stuff, so it got passed around and used to cut all manner of stuff. When I went through Sniper School I dummy corded the S2K to my pants belt and it crawled through every dust bowl, rock bed, stream and mud hole that I did. It got gritty, dirty and nasty, but it was still there when I needed to cut yards and yards of burlap strands and Natural Vegetation for my Ghillie. By the time the school was over the clip had drug the ground so much all the finish was gone and looked like I had leaned up against a belt sander.

Thank you, what a great testimonial for Almar!

Define "heavy use".

From my standpoint, it means "abuse". I do a lot of travelling. Obviously I won't have this knife with me flying (nor would I need it) but if I have an accident or some natural or manmade disaster strikes somewhere, I want to have a knife with me that can let me break glass, pry metal, cut through anything, etc. without breaking.

In a way, this will be my EDC carry knife for disasters, urban survival, just in case, etc. (I don't mind carrying heavy items with me).

I have a Buck Strider tanto that is the "older" style. Thi sknife has proven to be a rock solid folder for me. Lock-up has always been right on, and the handle is very rigid (My AFCK flexes, by B/S does not!). The thick materials used make it so solid and I have used the knife to cut, scrape, poke, chop, pry, etc. I would whole heartedly recommend the Buck/Striders, and would particularly give a nod to the spear point version. Solid, tough, super performer with a great warrantee: go for it!

I haven't seen anyone (might have missed it) mention a knife that can be had for $40-$45, is very heavy duty,
and ambidexterous to boot!

Ambi thumb studs, a flipper, thick SS liners, 5.7oz weight, four ways to mount one of two pocket clips that come
with it, and a LAWKS lock....to make it a virtual fixed blade! What is not to like?

IMHO, the CRKT M1-03K is the best bang for your buck...... period !! :D

When u told us "heavy duty" i thought u ment long term sharpness, beefy blade, massive lockup, good edge holding, non chipping premium steel, slipproof handle, something that u can take on your weekly campingtrip for the next 20 years, and wear everyday in your pocket for daily tasks. If u want to pry metal, break glass, "cut trough anything" i would like to suggest u go for a fixed blade (BUSSE, SWAMPRAT, STRIDER) designed for "abuse" No folder is designed for the abuse u are planning to do with it, and i am afraid that such a folding knife does not excist yet. So if u were planning on buying a Spyderco i think given the short lifespan u will get out of ANY folder when u try these things u should look into another manufacturer. Not that the Manix, i am holding right now could not do it for a while, it would just be a shame to ruin such a fine piece of mechanic to use as a "sharpende prybar".

Three come to mind , the Benchmade 520 , 420 , and the Spyderco Paramilitary .

Then you can forget folders, and the vast majority of fixed blades.
There's a lot of fantasizing that goes on on internet forums.
Overbuilt tactical knives are usually the worst choice for tough cutting jobs, though some of the thicker fixed blades make decent prybars, and you can beat them through things with a baton or hammer.
You'd be better off with a multitool that has wire cutters and pliers you can cut and bend stuff with, even do some light prying with, plain and serrated blades, wood saw, screwdrivers, etc, than a folder.
Not as glamorous as a cool "tactical" folder, but a much better tool for what you describe. Aside from cutting, so is a $10 nail puller from the hardware store for that matter.
