Height of new kiln

I've just recently acquired a new kiln and have been deliberating on the height it should be set. I've never seen or been close to one to see it in operation, but the thought of 2000 degree heat coming up to singe my eyebrows while trying to get a hot blade out doesn't sound like my idea of fun.
Please share with me the height you have yours set or would like to have it set.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes.

Mine is probably a foot off the ground, but only because it lives under something else. Personally it wouldn't really matter much to me, more just stick it where you have space

Mine is on a cart that's about 30" tall. Even at 2000 degrees the heat doesn't travel too far. Just wear a welding glove or something and you'll be good.

Thanks much for your replies. I was thinking 30" or higher might be better for getting stuff in and out and keeping my face away from the heat. Like you Geof I am going to put it on rollers to move out of the way when I don't need it
Best wishes.

That for me would be potentially hazardous. I don't think I'd want to be bending over that low reaching into something that hot. Not quite as flexible as I was in my 20's.

i too have mine on a cart easy to look into and grab blades out with pliers while having welding gloves on

I've always preferred proper tongs myself. Especially with stainless temperatures, pliers and welding gloves can be uncomfortably hot.
I'm currently using a pair of 18" chain tongs, but pretty well anything would work

Thanks guys, I too am thinking about counter top height or just a little higher so I can see into the kiln. That makes sense to me.
Geof, please help, what are chain tongs?
