Heirloom Knife Suggestions

For an heirloom knife, I'd probably go to a traditional pattern folder. Either from one of the better modern manufacturers (e.g. GEC), or a custom (Erickson/Coats/Esnyx) if your budget allows.

I've currently got this one slated to go to my son.

As with any heirloom, I expect he'll want one that I used and loved - more than one with objective market value. And that should probably guide your choice. What knife would you love to carry everyday. That's a knife he'll want too.

I think about the heirloom knife all the time. I am not sure why since I only have daughters. I hope though, that either they will get more in to knives, or one day they will have a grandson that I can pass a knife down to. I had never found that heirloom knife until I put a Chris Reeve Inkosi in my pocket. This was the first knife I ever owned that I knew I would pass down for hopefully many generations to come. I even kept a second one in case some day they are no longer made and someone looses mine.

The Inkosi is not my primary carry but is always in my lower cargo pocket or in my watch pocket. My primary carry rotates a good bit.

The reason I say the Inkosi is because the first time I ever took it apart. It is incredibly well made/engineered and it will be a great working knife for long after I am gone.

This is just my 2 cents. Hope it helps!

I feel this question is contextual to the owner. If gramps was a Marine, certainly a long carried tactical would have more heirloom value than perhaps his SAK. As an artist by training and vocation I'd hope my descendants would appreciate and retain one of my blades with a unique aesthetic. I already had a conversation with my adult kids to the effect of "it's up to you if you want to donate the Delica to the thrift store but think twice about the flamed and rusty looking all metal folding knife with the stoopid big blade stamped "MKT".

I ended up going with the Sebenza. I figured if I was going to pass one knife down I'd like it to be nice. Thanks for everyone's input.

great choice. Did you go for just a regular sebenza 21? there was a Youtube video soloknife fella cleaning up his ~ 16-20 year old sebbie.

I would go with the buck 110, case sodbuster Jr, or if your looking for a knife that will be kept even if someone ain't a knife person you should get a Christy knife because they're so interesting and who wouldn't keep it ( especially when it's only value would be sentimental )

Chances are they most of the knives we have from our grandfather's aren't worth much, but are worth more to us than the most expensive knife we could ever afford.

I like the way this man thinks! Knives I have from my grandfather have zero monetary value, but are also the only knives that I would never sell....
That being said, an heirloom knofe that I would want to pass on would be probably one of my PM2's or my Emerson CQC15. I know they would last a lifetime with little upkeep and maintenance and common sense. Remember, out fathers and grandfathers didn't call they're knives "traditionals", to them they were just knives, representative of when and where they were used, just like the Spyderco and Emerson would be for me.....
