Hey guys, in town for the day so I wanted to give my WSS bro's an update (no pics... yet, sorry :()

There's four 4man Initial Attack crew's stationed at the base, I'm in the second one. Living in a bunk house with 3 other guys, the accommodation's are pretty good, got an air conditioner and a separate fridge for beer.

The helicopter at our base is a Bell 205 "Huey", and I'm told it's the same one that was used in the film "Platoon", still has the "customs" logo from "holywood customs", the company that previously owned it. So far I havent been able to confirm this from a 3rd party, but if it's true it's pretty damn cool. Platoon was my favorite war movie:thumbup:.

There's only been 1 fire in our region so far, and only 1 crew got sent out to deal with it, so it's been a lazy week for the rest of us. Been chopping wood for the near by camp sites, sharpening axes, maintaining chainsaws, inventorying cook kits, but mostly fucking the dog and shooting the shit with the guys.

Finally got to do my fitness test yesterday, it was short but intense. Had to carry the MK3 power pump (80lb) 100m, then a hose box (200' of hose, aprox 70lb) for 300m, then drag a charged hose for 200m. You get 4:10 to complete this, I did it in 3:11, but was totally beat afterwards, could barely stand up lol. At some point I've got to do the "arduous pack test" to qualify for working out of province, it's a 5km walk with a 45lb pack with a time limit of 45 minutes, you dont have to do that part in full gear so it shouldnt be too bad.

Now that I've got my fishing rod and tacklebox I'll have something to do after work besides getting liqueured up, or should I say while I get liqueured up.

Cant wait to get on a fire, but I've gotta say I'm more nervous about flying around in that antique helicopter than anything else. One problem and youre falling out the sky like 3 tons of scrap metal and turning into a scattered heap of flaming flesh and debris. It's happened before, and it'll happen again, I just hope it doesnt happen to me.

Well I'm off to make the most of my day off, wont have another one for 2 weeks :thumbdn:. I'll update this thread at the end of the month, and I promise I'll have pictures then.

Awesome post Sketch. Good luck out there bro. Stay safe and stop some fires!

A little off topic man, but head to the RAT forum and claim your necker!

Already emailed Jeff on that, thx for looking out though tknife.

Rocky, I took the SP-100 training course in Ontario, and got my chainsaw certification before I applied (cost about $1200 for the courses). They werent required for working in Manitoba, and theyre going to retrain me anyway, but I think it really helped to get my foot in the door. I've heard of people just applying with no real credentials and getting hired, but experience in the bush and with small engines is a big plus.

Several of the helo's that went down in Iraq had survivors and I spent 100+ hours "touring" northern Iraq...I wouldn't worry about it as there's not much you can do. Enjoy the ride and stay safe on the job...

Well SON OF A BITCH! I just had a long detailed post for you guys to make up for not replying for so long, I go to upload one more picture and photobucket had an error and caused firefox crashes...

I dont have the time--and i'm too pissed off--to rewrite it right now, so I'm just going to throw up a few pictures and ask away.

^A crewmember clutching his balls after catching a bottle of gatorade I tossed him with his testicles and narrowly avoiding going down that steep rock hill.

Hey, sketchbag, I wouldn't worry about that chopper, man. The "Huey" series is about the most robust and dependable ships ever fielded. Except maybe the 214. Those things have WAY too much power!
