Helko Axe Factory Edge

It must bewilder & amuse the manufacturers of axes and such tools.
I expect they enjoy the internet Axeboner fueled additional sales, But the level of nitpick over massproduced tools what are intended to work, take a beating, sharpen, ad infinitum. Must create headscratching at their respective factories.

I relish for the day when folks carp about their hayfork or shovel is somehow insignificantly flawed.

Because something works, doesn't mean it was worth the price, that concept is not challenging. If they spend $125+ on a hayfork or a handforged shovel then they're more than welcome to complain :D

Just for giggles. A Harbor Freight Helko. I think the plastic wedge had a tab on it at one time that you could hang it by.

Maybe I should look into getting one of these ha!

As i said im not familiar with the Helko axes, but they dont strike me as quite as "boutique" as some of the others (gransfors etc) so maybe your expectations are not quite aligned with what the brand offers.

I guess so. My issue with this is I've spent less than half of this, on axes marketed as being "handforged", that came superior to the helko. My 5 husqvarnas (from hatchet to maul) ran me from $35-$100 shipped each, and all came clean and with less work to put an edge on.

Thanks for the comments everyone

Ha ha !
I am abundantly aware shortcomings of many current manufacture forks & shovels.
Like so many manufactured things, "aint what it used to be".
Just wait until someone carps about the forging seam on the shovel back is crooked or one forktine is slightly longer than its companion... "Is it somehow inferior, was I cheated, what should I do, send it back???"

Maybe I am calling the kettle black ??
I just bought a new Hilux. 100% perfect excepting a couple drips in the chassis paint.
Oh was I ever freaked out & babbling, Yet the Toyota dealer & everybody on the Forums thought I was nuts...

More relishing here re: pitchforks.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1413078-Pitchforks

I was looking at the Imacasa website the other day and it looked like they made some decent forged pitchforks. I'd like to examine them in person.

To the OP, sorry for going off topic.
He is on the first page of that thread relishing.:D

Its kind of odd how they have went backwards. Costs more but get less.
If you are returning that let us know how it goes.

And I will drop this here also.

These grinder oopsies must be my paint drips :p

Anyway I'll stop beating the dead horse. I truly like the design, and the haft is phenomenal (crafted in Switzerland w/ American hickory). So I will be contacting customer service to see if what I received is out of the norm. I'll just leave the description here...

Each piece is handcrafted by Helko’s master smiths with over 170 years of expertise. Once the smith is satisfied with his work, the Helko crown is hammered into the cheek. No supplementary work, such as grinding, buffing, or painting is performed, thereby allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks.

I wouldn't be worried about the grinder mark, but the totally unfinished edge would be a disappointment. Even though I have access to a grinder and would probably be thinning it out anyhow, I'd still be irked by the value of what I was receiving. If you're otherwise satisfied and don't have any trouble in grinding an edge on it, go ahead and keep it and put it to use.

I think this is more like complaining about a hay fork that cost $125 and had no points on the tines, or a forged shovel that had a large-but-functionally-insignificant void in the socket weld. For the money it shouldn't be a flaw that's present.

Totally agree! That last one was moreso out of humor with Lieblad talking about nitpicky complaints. Also looks funny next to their description saying no grinding is performed ha!

I was told that they don't use filler in the eye to fill gaps after I used their hatchet once and the filler started falling out.

Good luck with their customer service. Hope you don't get the unhelpful argumentative person that I got, Spencer.

after reading that thread, now I want to see what they come back with in the OP's case lol. Should make some good reading
