helle knives any good??

The are great, I really like my Helle Odell. Besides being scary sharp and great quality, the Reindeer antler spacers in the handle are downright nice looking!

Frosts of Sweden Swedish Army Knife SS
Brustletto Nostalgi blade (Handle by ME) Carbon
Both excellent knives in the 4" range

IJ 1244
The Duke of Scandi blades...carbon steel and birch bark.
(I think Ragnar calls the birch bark the 1243 now and the new 1244 is stacked leather)

Helle, Brusletto, IJ, Frosts of Sweden....all good.
And there are plenty of models to pick from, both carbon & SS.

If I had to pick one it would be the IJ
Or the stag Brusletto
:D

Just a heads-up... you can buy Fallkniven blades from bladematrix.com (and I'm sure, other retailers) You likely already know that Ragnar sells unfinished blades from other respected manu's, as well as complete kits. (the sheaths leave a bit to be desired) If you're looking for a project, I don't think you could go wrong that way.

If you're looking for a finished knife, I doubt you'd regret a Frost's, Brusletto, Helle, etc. I say, your wife is right that you should make it count. Set a budget and pick out a real nice one you wouldn't normally buy!

Just watch the handles on Helle's; they run small. I bought a Harding, and had to give it to my daughter for her birthday. Well made knife, though. Laminated VG-10 steel.

I have to ask Riley, why are you only after a stainless blade, are you going to be using it around salt water ?

Helle Knives are some good stuff, with a few idiosyncracies.

The sheathes usually suck. I actually like Scandinavian styled sheathes as a whole, but the quality of Helle sheathes are a bit iffy at times.

they scratch very easily, and I can usually bend them with my two thumbs. they bend right back, and don't break, but it's an odd idiosyncracy to get used to.

They're great for general bushcraft, okay for hunting. A friend of mine cleaned two moose with his without ever resharpening it- he's a Helle fanatic now.

extremely easy to resharpen. If you can't get a Helle sharp, and quickly....well....I just don't know what to say for ya'....:D

My favorite Helle is the Wind, although I like my Lapplander extremely well also. I have a few more, but not many these days. Not due to a lack of quality, but a lack of funds, and also a wider based interest in other Scandi knives.

THanks for everything so far guys....Pit, I'm a stainless fan (everbody winces) My older brother got me into knives got me my first slipjoint when I was 6 years old...He swore by buck knives and stainless knives I spent much of my child hood growing up around a salt water canal before my parents moved to the mountains where I spent the second part of my childhood. and it kind of stuck I do do alot of water activities kayaking, diving, fishing and I used to (before the baby) and will again travel frequently to subtropical and tropical areas to pursue various outdoor activites so it makes sense...maybe it's just a hangup though I don't know...I'm not to hard on my knives...I use them when I need to but I usually use a machete (carbon) for my heavy work. and use my belt knife for "at hand cutting tasks" so I've never had a stainless blade fail "Knock on wood" but in general I tend to prefer them, although I only have limited experience with carbon and tool steels. just an idiosyncracy I suppose.
