Helle knives? Anybody got any?

Helle knives are great -- I have an Eggen, nice drop-point. The side panels of the laminated blade are 18/8 stainless, which has been around practically forever, and the core is a high carbon steel, so it sharpens easily and holds an excellent edge. Very light weight, good for backpacking. The sheath was pretty shoddy, nice design but thin, inadequate leather. I cut it apart and used it as a pattern to make sturdier sheath out of heavier latigo leather.

The Eggen looks pretty good. These Helle knives are priced right too. Ragweed Forge has a great site with a large selection of good knives. I bought a Kullervo h8 from Kellam Knives. It has a birch bark handle. It stays warm in your hand in cold weather. This type of handle could be good for you up there in Alberta. We get some cold winters in NH,But I'm sure you guys get wicked cold temps. How's the hunting up your way?

I JUST RECEIVED MY HELLE #30 JUBLIEUM KNIFE IT IS IT IS SO SHARP IT IS UNBELIEVABLE. THE SHEATH HAS NO PLASTIC LINER. I WAS A LITTLE SUPRISED. i MAY TRY TO INSSERT SOME PLASTIC WITH GLUE ON IT INTO THE SHEATH WHERE THE SHARP SIDE OF THE BLADE GOES. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I SHOULD DO. THIS BLADE IS PRETTY HEFTY AND WICKED SHARP. FOR $80 IT IS A TRMENDOUS KNIFE. IT WAS FEATURED IN THE LAST ISSUE OF TACTICAL KNIVES.

I have the Harding, The Nying and the Symfoni. I love all three of them best. I still want the Laplander.

I have a Symfoni which is a great knife. More are on the horizon.

Sorry for the bad picture, I will get a better one up soon. Here is my Helle Fjellkniven along with a couple other knives. This knife just feels right in the hand.
I can't wait to buy a couple of other models including a Leuku.

I have the Harding and it is a beautiful thing!

The blade is so flat and so highly polished, I can honestly use it as a mirror when messing around changing contact lenses, etc..

Stay sharp,

Check out http://www.kellamknives.com/ also. Ragnar is a pleasure to deal with and as soon as he's back from vacation, I have an order for him. :)

Esav (again) speaks the truth. Ragnar @ Ragweed Forge is indeed a pleasure to deal with. He has knives on his web site that are the same basic knife as Kellams, but will cost less money. Check out the Ahiti, and Karesunado lines. :D

I have been flirting with the idea of getting a Helle Odel or fjelkniven because the are so attractive as well as functional looking. I wish they came in carbon though.

I have owned a Fjelkniven. FIRST RATE KNIFE despite the laminated SS.

Being a carbon steel lover/promoter/fan, I was pleasantly surprised by Helle's SS. Easy to sharpen up, held the edge well, and then there is the whole SS quality to it. Use it as a knife, and you will do well. Use at as (whats so popular now) prybar, batoning through a Volkswagen, quartering a Water Buffalo and you have the wrong tool.

JMNSHO of course.;):D

I'm ready to treat myself a little this month. I have been looking on Ragnars Forge lately. What shall I buy? Everyone loves these puukkos. They are beautiful knives. We hunt and have fires on the land. We bring cheese, weiners, and liquor. We use these beauties for camp chores, breasting ducks, picnicing, etc. Nobody who is around, and many of the people are not hunters, have never mentioned anything but praise for the puukkos. they are so handy around a camp.they are considered very useful tools.

I still have my first knife - a Helle from 1948 !! and a very recent laminated SS that I had a handle added.

I've had a FJORDING for about 18 years, my grandparents got from norway back in the early eighties. Great whittling knife, handy leather sheath that covers the whole knife.
I haven't used it for a long time but I remember it being very very sharp. Mines not stainless, and does appear to be laminated.
Cheers
Jules
