Helle

I asked a salesman how I could buy a decent knife for a decent price withut money grubbing middlemen forcing the price up .
He told me to go to Helle ............At least I think that is what he said . L:O:L

Actually he said to to Helen.
Mrs Waite is in charge of the complaint department.
So if you want to complain, go to Helen Waite.

:P
:D

Hey Ebbtide, I have a very similar set up but mine is a Case CV Canoe and a #16 Wetterlings. Fear not, I will be getting more! :)

Sorry Kevin, you kind of hung a curveball out there and I had to hit it.
:D

Sounds like a good trio, Temper.

Thats O:K: I like playing with words . Some of my French Canadian friends say bear instead of beer and vice versa . When they say they had a good bear last night it always makes me wonder . L:O:L

If someone ever invents invents Brown Bear Beer I think I would laugh my guts out .

By gosh there isn't anything that ya can't get done with that combo!

Last time I had a complaint, Helen Waite indicated that I had to stand in the far queue. But there was nobody else there.

Here's the recipe for Helle's carbon steel core, from Ragnar at Ragweed Forge

Is that on all of their carbon knives? How hard do they run it? Do you have any details on the heat treatment?

-Cliff

I have used it now for about 2 hours of total work perforning typical 'Bushcraft' chores The edge is still very keen and if I need it to be like a scalpel I run it twice each side over a #1200 ceramic steel and its back to NIB sharpness.

Cliff, I really think Helle would reply if you emailed them, better to get it from the horses mouth eh?

cliff i reckon its my helle is about 57-58 rockwell it sharpens up pretty easily for a scandi grind probely due to being laminated. You can't scrape it on wood unlike the carbon steel mora's without the edge rolling.

How much wood scraping can you do with the carbon steel Mora's before you lose precision cutting ability and want to resharpen. What type of wood are you using?

-Cliff

cliff it's hard to say how much wood the mora's can scrape its not something i do a lot of. Most of wood scraped is hard ash to make a nice smooth surface on spoons etc sometimes bow drills too(willow). At a rough guess i would estimate i'd get two large spoons before resharpening is needed. The helle can’t do one without the edge rolling to the point where it has next to no cutting ability.

The carbon steel Mora's have a higher spec'ed hardness at 60 HRC and the steel has a much higher carbon content so you would expect a much better wear resistance. For that type of work, the edge on a piece of broken glass works well as a scraper. You can also square off the spine of the knife and basically turn it into a cabinet scraper, though this has ergonomic concerns.

Have you tried any of the really high carbon / high hardness scandinavian blades. There are some well above 60 HRC with much higher carbon steels which should do well for such applications.

-Cliff

cliff i just got a fallkniven f1 which has a very sharp spine it's worked well as a rough scraper for barks i'll give it a go at scraping wood thanks for the advice.
