I have recently become intrigued with knives. I have always liked the idea of having a knife for whatever purpose, but just never really found a reason to carry one. I am now in my mid 20's and figured no better time than now to get involved. I spent the last couple days doing research online and perusing this and other forums to see what would fit my "needs", althought I have no "need" for a knife. I wanted a blade that is comfortable with jeans, but also something that would last a while. I usually go by the motto "you buy cheap, you buy twice". Originally I was looking at the Spyderco Persistance and Ambition. Both were small and Spyderco seems to have a great rep. After doing some more digging, I decided to spend a little more money and grab a Dragonfly 2 FRN-VG10. I chose this over the other blades because of the lightness of the knife, but also think the VG10 will hold up better in South Florida than the blades on the other knives. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this knife in the mail, as it will be my first knife. Already looking at what my next purchase might be down the road. Liking the Dragonfly Salt H1 SE just because I am hearing great things about the small SE on this blade.

Did I make a good choice? I will mostly just use the knife for whatever purpose shows up, but I do work in an office environment. I know it is a small knife and blade, but figured it is big enough in case a bar brawl breaks out. lol Any suggestions for a noob? Any good youtube vids or anything to recommend to hone my knife skills? Anyways, just wanted to say hello.

Welcome.

The first bold statement = O. M. G. Don't say that here.

The seconds bold statement = WIN

You can't go wrong with Spyderco, have a good experience.

Don't joke about fighting with a pocket knife. First, it makes you, and other knife owners by association, look bad in court, and widespread media coverage of a court incident could make bleeding heart liberals push for more bans and restrictions. Second, an error in your knife's locking mechanism, usually from poor maintenance, could cause injury to you. Third, folding knives are generally too short to be properly used as weapons, especially that Dragonfly 2 that you're eyeing, so do expect to get your ass kicked, and hard, by someone who knows how to actually fight. Pulling out a knife in a fight, especially a fist fight, and especially one that you're going to lose, will do you more harm than good. If you want a fighting knife, get a fixed blade bowie knife or a push dagger, but do expect to get hassled by law enforcement for carrying them.

First, welcome to the world of knives. Spyderco makes great knives. I think you will enjoy using the knife you chose.

Keep in mind that knives are tools. While many folks collect them, admire them, and some consider them investments, they are still tools. I personally don't carry a knife for self defense. I carry a knife for cutting things, not people. Like was said earlier, the attitude that knives are for fighting with, is probably not such a good idea. At least for most civilian folks that would be the case.

Once you get that first knive you will find all kinds of things to cut. Paper, boxes, veggies, fruit, steaks......all will become targets to be cut. You find out how nice it is to have a cutting tool with you anytime the need arises. Enjoy! And know this......it WON'T be the last knife you buy.

welcome to bf

great first choice !

remember its not a pry tool (easy rookie mistake ).

keep it in the office , not in the bar !

Thanks for the replies. I was mostly joking about the bar brawl stuff, but I understand that knives are not toys and talking about fighting is not to be taken lightly.

Cant wait to get this in hand. I was looking at various chords and lanyards on Amazon. Does anybody suggest a specific lanyard for such a small knife? Any info would be great. Thanks again.

Can't ever go wrong with a Spyderco. Welcome to Bladeforums.

The best lanyard is the one you make yourself. Para and mosquito cord can be had at any army junk store. There are more tutorials on youtube about how to make them than you can shake a stick at. And get ready to be perpetually knife hungry. Welcome aboard the crazy train.

I have never liked using lanyards on my knives. When cleaning/butchering animals the lanyard would get soaked in blood and other body fluids. They also collect dirt, vegetable and fruit matter and juices. Once they get soiled you can wash them. But, I have never liked the hassle, or smell of them afterwards.

Congratulations on your first knife and Welcome to bladeforums!

One of the key words that you used was "first." You bought your "first knife." First implies second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.

Cut your credit cards while you still can!

Welcome to blade forums! That first knife is the "bite" that leads to the illness/obsession/passion that is inherent to quality knives. Nice choice on the Spyderco.

I would offer two suggestions. First, check out some you tube videos on properly maintining a folder. Specifically keeping it and the locking mechanisms clean and free of debris. Also, on maintaining a well honed/stropped, etc. edge. An 'oops' from a sharp knife sucks, but heals quickly and cleanly. An 'oops' from an improperly maintained edge sucks, hurts and leaves a nastier scar. But, "scars are just tattoos with better stories"!

Enjoy the arrival of a small, flat box filled with obsession and wonders!

Hi and Welcome

One knife to look at with Spyderco is the native. Doesn't cost that much but comes with s30v.

As far as lanyards are concerned I'll put one one if I go camping to minimize losing it but take it off for everyday edc

Good to know that you understand.

I don't think it's necessary to use lanyards on knives unless they have poor retention or you're putting a significant amount of force on it(eg: combat, batoning, etc.). Also, your comment about how they soak up liquids reminded me of how the Chinese used tassels on their weapons to soak up any blood that may end up on the handle to prevent their hands from slipping and causing accidents.

I took a while to warm up to Spyderco, but my Delica 4 is now my favorite knife to EDC. I actually have a Dragonfly in ZDP coming tomorrow. Can't wait. Welcome!

All I can say is now that you have bought a knife save your money because it wont be your last!!:D:D:D
Welcome and congrads on a good 1st knife! Kevin

Welcome to the site, their is a great community here. Yea, I view knives as tools and not weapons. You are starting off right buy just out right buying a quality knife. Spyderco is a great brand as a few have already said, this wont be your last knife purchase.
