Hello all...First knife...tips for the newbie?

Welcome to Blade Forums. I think you made a good solid choice for your first knife. Now, as for what to do about the second knife.....

I would urge you to return the extra knife and hold your own self to a higher standard. If you hold true to this policy, many good returns will come back to you.

Alright alright, i'll shoot them an e-mail and tell them they made a mistake...

But more importantly, how often should I be oiling/lubing the blade/joint?

And I'll look into the spyderco sharpmaker

Welcome aboard! You've got a lot of good advice here. Enjoy your new knife, and don't forget to keep it sharp. It's a lot easier to touch up the edge periodically than it is to sharpen a dull knife. Also, make an effort to hone your sharpening skills as you go, many people can help you here, myself included. but most importantly, just enjoy.

Living isn't very important because some good white lithium grease will last awhile. I lube it when I take mine apart. Once every 6 months is all I do it but my knife is pulled out of my pocket about 5 times a day to get used so I don't open it much and don't need to lube it as much.
But I'm not too picky about my knife, unless it's broken or the blade is rubbing the scales I'm happy.
