Hello all..need opinion

Add me to the ZT crew. 0560 is fantastic. I dunno what Extrema R warranty and CS is like but I do know Kershaw/ZT is hard to beat in that department.

Hello mfi,
You can go to the Buck website and make a nice 110 w/s30v steel for approx 100.00.
Clay

The Buck 110 with S30V is a great option, but why go through Buck's website when you can get the Cabela's version with rosewood handles, brass bolsters and a gorgeous "blued" finish that reminds me of the finish on a Colt Python? Oh, and they're $89 and you don't have to wait. I bought four of them just before they raised the price and if you're in this for the steel, you can't do any better. If steel's not that important, I disagree that the Cold Steels are too expensive. Well, they might be if you pay retail, but I buy mine through eBay and get pretty good prices there. If you get a Recon 1 with a teflon coated blade, you'll get a very strong, very sharp knife that's easy to sharpen. They come in clip point and tanto, and if you can live with the Voyagers, the knife can be had for almost nothing.

The 4-inch tanto Voyager is a light, strong knife. The Recon 1 is essentially the same knife with G-10 scales and a black teflon blade. The Spyderco folks have just released a flat grind Endura 4 that goes for about $50 if you shop around. It's strong and light, and many prefer the VG-10 steel. It also comes in various colors, so you can have a blue, green, gray, purple or black. I even think there's a white. I have a black saber grind model that I prefer more because I like the extra weight and thick spine, but I also have a green one I picked up from eBay. Whatever you pick, you can't go wrong.

what do you mean "big snap lock"?
The sheath's flap has a snap lock buckle on it, kind of big.
Its not that I want to carry a scary knife, I just need a big blade to cut through..some big stuff. The worst is pipe insulation which can be very thick as the pipes can be 14 inches in diameter. Its rigid fiberglass covered with pvc..we have to chop it out to get to parts of the pipe for inspections, valve changeouts..We'll see when I get it..I can always get other knives..and plan to..

I would get a couple 4 inch Voyagers or a Recon 1. Have been using mine to help renovate our new house inside and out and I'm always pleased with results and condition of the blade at end of the day. Mine have suffered much more than the average pocket knife. Edge retention is very good if sharpened well to begin with and handles are better than most.

A Victorinox Camper paired with a 4 inch Voyager for about $60 combined will handle a ton of
tasks and last a long time.

I'm thinking of replacing my current work knife, a CRKT Crawford Casper that I've carried at work for about 6 years. I'm a building engineer so I use it quite a bit. I need a pretty strong knife so I've been looking at the Extrema Ratio MF1. It looks to be a very well made piece and its something different from all the other ones out there. Any opinions??

That's awesome that you carried that CRKT Crawford for such a long time, sometimes I wish i carried one knife for years on end :D.

Go get a Zero Tolerance 560, Spyderco Tuff, Benchmade Contego, Emerson Commander, Benchmade Adamas, and so on. There's soo many hard use knives in you're price range, and right now those kind of knives are extremely popular. Whatever you choose im sure you'll be happy with it!

Now that I have the bug again I'll probably end up with a lot of those..I'll write a review once I have the Topps for a few months and beat it up a bit...

Why would you think of replacing your current knife? Is there anything wrong with it? I'd say go with what works.

Good question. I just felt it was time to try something new and maybe better. The Topps has a tanto blade and is longer, also G-10 handles as opposed to the aluminum the CRKT has. Its like a car that you've had for a while and just want to change..a;though I've had my Jeep since 99 and my Vette for 8 years with no plans to change them..a bit harder to do with those though..

oh, ok.

as far as cutting insulation, if you mentioned that earlier i would have told you that CPM-M4 steel will be one of your best, more readily available steel choices.

question: what made you decide to buy the Topps CQT Magnum 711?

I've pretty much been loking online for days now and just happened to come across it. Fired up a few review vids and like what I saw. It was the right size (huge) had G-10 scales which I like on my Emerson A100, not made in China, price point is OK as I was looking to spend almost double on an Extrema which does not get a lot of good press around here, and this place is a great one for first hand knowledge, and it came with a sheath which saves me some bucks...and if I don't like it...I'll just get something else..I have a feeling I will though.

Zero Tollerance 350 or 300 depending on what you are going for. Great pieces of equipment and great customer service for the hard use.

given all the info i know now about how you will be using the knife, i would have suggested either the benchmade 760 or 810. good luck with the tops, write a review after putting it through it's paces.

being that you like having a sheath, have you considered carrying a fixed blade?

Nice call confederate, Cabela's does have s30v(Alaske guide series) with the nice bluing for 89.99 plus whatever shipping costs. I happen to own 1 but bought it at an antique store for 50.00 (got lucky for once). One thing about the Buck Site is it's fun to create all the knives i can't afford.

a fixed blade would be too big. I'm in a commercial office building with over 2000 tenants, wouldn't want to scare the hell out of them. At almost 6 inches closed the Topps is the limit to carry on the belt. A fixed blade of this size would be at least 8 inches.I pretty much limit knife use to the mechanical areas, tenant spaces I rely on the Leatherman.

Came in the mail yesterday..WOW..this thing is huge. The blade is extremely sharp, especialy the tip. The sheath is huge as well, a bit too big but it works. I don't want it too noticable but it sits next to my leatherman so no one will really know what it is, don't want to scare the tenants.I'll use it for about a month and write a review. Hope I can keep it as sharp as it came, have to practice with the edge pro.

If what you are looking for is excellent big knife slicing ability you might check out the Spyderco Manix 2 XL; the full flat grind makes it an excellent cutter, although a serrated edge might work better for cutting fiberglass. Edge geometry makes a big difference in cutting power....
