No offense taken, but I'm laughing too! The roads down here aren't exactly straight or flat. My trip was from Roanoke to Grundy, VA, 3.5 hours 175 miles. Talking about going farther down into SW VA? It's 5 hours and 15 minutes to Cumberland Gap, 243 miles away. This is the closest you can come to the VA/TN/KY border. Going east, I can make the water at Virginia Beach in a little under 6 hours, at a distance of 299 miles. 7 hours or longer if there's any traffic around Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Hampton Roads, etc. A lot of military bases down there. To DC? 4 hours (at night when there's no traffic) and 243 miles. The closest city, population-wise is Greensboro, NC at about 2 hours 15 minutes. So NGK, at a little over 2 hours at 115 miles is "close". But you're right, I plan on a pilgrimage at least every month or so. The Band-Aid dispenser is worth the trip in itself!
I've got a good friend that was stationed near Denver...he loves it there and wants to go back. But alas, he's too old now...he just recently dropped his Harley, and the Doctors at the VA want him to sell it! He didn't get hurt, except for crushing his pride and a little road rash!
