My first post here. I'm proud to own a piece of Schrade history. This particular knife was given to me as a gift in 1986. To my surprise I recently found that it is one of the rarer models (Uncle Henry LB8). I wanted to know what the serial number means on the brass bolster. The number is A7528. Any information would be helpful. Maybe it is just a production number? Can you tell what year it was manufactured by this number?

Welcome, Hedger!

I don't follow the UH line myself, but someone will be along who can definitely help you.

So pull up a chair, and hang around. We can make you a marguerita while you are waiting. Salt or no salt?

Welcome Hedger. That is the serial number. At one time, Uncle Henry's were insured by the factory against loss, if you can beleive that. You had to fill out the little card that came with the knife when you bought it, then, in case of a loss, you could make a claim. Unreal, huh?

I don't know if anyone has put together a date/serial number list. You were told right, you do have one of the more rare Schrades. Called the "papa bear" if was first produced in 1982 and offered in the catalog until 2000, but made in limited production runs.

The serial number was from the first or second year of production, I believe. It seems they ran thru the numbers first, then added "A" to a new round, then "B", then so on thru "AA", "BB" etc. The factory records haven't surfaced to tell us exactly, so this is just from a Codger's memory of an old post here.

I would have expected a pearl handle though. :D

There is no telling what got hauled away by whom, and where it all ended up. Ive heard descriptions of the parade of people coming and going, carrying whatever they could lift and tote. We are already finding more bits and pieces of the Schrade puzzle, so I do hold out hope for more.

Alas, I am not stout-hearted and bold enough to venture into the hinterlands of the Untied Forum to claim the hand of the maidens, Ellenville or otherwise.

Thanks for what information you have given so far. It seems these numbers are somewhat elusive and it looks like they were stamped rather than etched. Do any of you think counterfiet examples will surface or are these knives still too common? I've seen many late model LB8's on eBay with Uncle Henry stamped on the tang. I think the earlier models just have Shcrade+ and LB8 stamped. Am I correct?

Hedger... Perhaps a year ago or whenever it was that Schrades were at their peak of value (it was crazy) someone might have screwed around with tang stamps, ect, but I doubt it. Honestly, if one were going to all that trouble and expense, they would have been fooling around with old Remington or Case knives. Real money to be made in counterfieting those things.

Most of the info I gave you came from the excellent book: A Catalog History of Schrade Knives (uncle henry & old timer) by Robert Clemente. In the notes on this knife he does mention the tang stampings you have found. Those knives are most likely to be legit.

The book mentioned is invaluable for the Schrade collector. Available from:

Thank you textoothpk. I will need to get that book. I'll try to get some pics posted. I still have the box it came in with the box sleeve if that is good. How are you guys storing your knives?

Welcome Hedger!
I keep a lot of my knives in the box they came in......if they came in one.
Don't throw the box away  It will increase the value of the knife and it also helps date the knife.

Welcome to the forum!

I dont have enough knives to hide them away. I try and display all I have although the room is getting a little smaller every day. I put the boxes and paper work away and have a big box full of sheaths but the knives are all in view and get handled a lot. Some are on shelves others are in wall mounted foam filled display cases. Reminds me that I need to start playing with the springers a little more.
