Hello from a new member

Welcome. I've only been here a few weeks but I can tell you that this is a really nice place to hang out. Lots of helpful folks here. Enjoy!!

Linus

Thanks yet again for the warm welcome (I'm starting to feel like I'm wearing out that phrase!). As I've already said this is my third knife forum so my wallet is pretty well accustomed to the strains and pitfalls of hanging out in such places:D, that said given my preferences it should come through ok.

hunterjrg: I won't be posting pics any time soon due to a lack of a digital camera. As for my collection, its pretty small and mainly consists of modern/current swiss army knives.

Off the top of my head I've got:

2 swisschamps

3 farmers including 1 each in black & blue alox

1 huntsman

1 alox solo

2 or 3 wenger patriots

1 recruit

1 vintage 3 1/4" climber small with long nail file

1 Rough Rider canoe from the long rifle series

1 Rough Rider 6 blade stockman also from the long rifle series

and that's about it for my collection.

SAKs are welcome here, and they pair will with other traditionals (if carrying two pocket knives at the same time doesn't horrify you).

For the first 3 months of the year, this combo was what I carried daily:

For the past couple of months, it has been primarily that Cadet alone, but currently a Buck 303 Stockman has started keeping it company (sorry, don't have any pics of that combo). Both knives were under $30 US each, so you certainly don't have to spend a lot of money to get very good quality, serviceable traditional knives that will cover most people's normal needs just fine.

I've also got the larger cousin of that Cadet, the Alox Electrician. I carry it when I think I might need something a little bigger than the Cadet. Hard to tell the difference without something to compare to, but this is the Electrician:

Hi JC I know SAKs are welcome here, I saw the recent thread on whether or not they counted as traditionals. The idea of carrying two pocket knives doesn't horrify me in itself but the anti-knife views of the public here in the UK and my age make me wary of doing so.

Welcome to the forums, Stareagle.

SAK's are fine pocket knives, and are very respected here. I have a few around, and do carry and use them. As much as I love the old jigged bone and carbon steel, I have to admit that when I'm flying off to someplace on vacation, of all the knives Ihave, I will mail a SAK to myself to where I'm staying. I spent a week in Key West, fishing, kayaking the mangroves, hanging out at the Schooner Wharf bar, and picnicking att he beach. My sole pocket knife for the week of cutting bait, limes for the cold gin and tonics, and picnic duty was a Victorinox recruit. It did everything I needed.

For a week on the Rogue River in Oregon, river rafting, fishing, and more picnics in wild ares of some National forests where the giant redwoods were, I had mailed myself a Victorinox hiker. I figured if some mishap on the river put me ashore in strange territory, I wanted the SAK saw on hand.

But for everyday life in the savage sprawls of suburbia, the 58mm SAK's do fine. Imade up a small leather sheath to carry my classic on my car keys, so I can't leave home without it.

But, I've never been able to shake my life of the traditional pocket knife, so when I don't carry a SAK, I'm okay with a Sear's keychain screw driver and a P-38 from my army days, both stashed in my wallet. Last fall when I crossed the U.S. by car with my better half to see our family in California, the Case peanut in my pocket and the P-38 did all I needed, plus sooth my sole with the jigged bone of the peanut acting like a great worry stone.

SAK's a nd a traditional make a good dynamic duo of everyday pocket knives. :thumb up:

My edc 'never left behind' SAK.

Thanks for the welcome Jackknife, though of all the enablers/pushers here you and your fine stories are the one I'm cursing the most:grumpy:;).

I was perfectly happy and thought I had figured out my "grail knife" set-up:rolleyes:, then someone on another forum posted a link to your stories and after I finished I had a whole new avenue of knives and the lobster knives especially have caught my eye. So I have to start all over again!:eek::mad:

How are SAK's reacted to in the UK? No big deal, or "keep a low profile"?

About the same way I imagine someone using any knife in the US would be. Brandish it about threatening people = big trouble, use it in a reasonable manner where there is a need = no big deal.

Also the comment I made was in relation to how knife related crime is portrayed in the media in general over here. I fortunately live in a semi rural area with a few small towns close by so most people around here seem to understand the need and use of a pocket knife, especially something like a SAK with a few extra tools on. That alone seems to take them from "Weapon" to "Tool".

That said I imagine in the the big city's like London with their gang problems it would be best to "keep a low profile" with one, even though they are perfectly legal.

Welcome aboard mate. Please note that grail knife is only a virtual concept describing the knife you don't have yet.
