I am new to this forum, but not Bladeforums. I live in Knoxville Tn and am fortunate to have the mountains really close so it is great for day hikes. I have been looking over the threads and am really impressed at the experience and overall knowledge of all of you. I have been a hiker since I was in my early teens and have hiked in TN, GA, AZ, CO, NM, and VA. I lost my way for awhile with the addition of four kids, but now that they are getting older they are showing an interest in the outdoors, which makes me HAPPY! Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and I enjoy your forum. I like to see pictures of the members, so here is the family.

Hey buddy welcome aboard, I look forward to seeing some pics of your hiking spots.

Welcome to the forum! Good looking family you have there, you've been a busy man! I live near chattanooga so I know your neck of the woods a little, I like to go hiking up there when ever I can get up that way, beautiful area up there.

Welcome aboard Bowden, and you do have a wonderful looking family! I've been fortunate enough to have a family that enjoys the outdoors as much as I do...in fact my wife, son and I are planning a backpacking trip tomorrow (my daughter is off to a youth camp sponsored by our church). You kids look old enough to hit the trail, just start them on easier trails; get some small kid's hydration packs and let them enjoy the outdoors and explore. Thanks for joining the WSS crew:thumbup:

Rock6, I never thought about hydration packs, they would love those.

Well, not to fill with JD:D Actually, there are some inexpensive kid's version that are a great way to break them into carrying a pack AND staying hydrated. Some even have small pouches/pockets so they can carry their own snacks and even some basic "essentials" such as a whistle for signaling. Here is my son's day-hiking pack that could serve as a 72-hour bag if he was lost or I was injured and couldn't travel:

I started my son with just a very basic 1.5 liter neoprene cover with shoulder straps and this is what he progressed to before we started doing overnight backpacking trips.
