A great place to start are some of the picture threads right here in General Knife Discussion like:

EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today? or
Everyone's latest acquisitions! or
Show what you did with your EDC today.

They are pretty much always on the first page. Don't be afraid to ask what something is. You can kill a lot of hours in the EDC XIII thread and get a lot of ideas of varying expense. If you start to figure out your type, there may be a specific forum to look at. Have fun! It's a kind and helpful bunch here.
