Hey there!

My name is Taylor and I am new the forums, however I am not new to reading here. I have gone through many cheap knives and they aren't cutting it any more (hehe I see what I did there) I could use some help. I am looking to invest in a fixed blade, unfortunately the laws in my state require it to be 3 inches or less. I am willing to spend as much as 150$ or more (maybe.) Although, I would really rather spend less than that. I am looking for a jack of all trades; Beatable and will hold an edge to any task (obviously not forever.)
Thanks for any help I really appreciate it.

Izula or Candiru from Esse are both excellent if you don't mind carbon steel. Hogue's Neckers are very good stainless (154CM) options. Also just a friendly bit of advice might want to edit that emoticon, only allowed to use that one in the non family friendly parts of the forum, like Whine and Cheese.

Hey Taylor,

First: Welcome to the forum!

Second: We have the same name, which in my opinion makes you awesome

Third: Do you have a preference on steel? Do you live in a humid area or near the ocean? If you don't mind the idea of caring for carbon steel, I would recommend that. In my experience with steels like O1 and A2, they can baton through wood (if they're thick enough) and generally take a beating while holding a terrific edge. Then, once that edge does start to go away, they're pretty easy to get shaving sharp again.

You'll get some great recommendations here but I would suggest that you check out LT Wright Knives and Battlehorse Knives. These two companies used to be one, but they parted ways a few years ago. They have some great designs, make tough knives and their attention to detail is beautiful. They typically use carbon steel, and at 3 inches or less I bet you could find a great option for about 150 bucks.

Good luck, and let us know what you get!

I'm not fond of the lack of grip on the candiru, I'll look into Hogue's. Thank you as well, about the emoticon.

I live in the Chicago area, so yes due to the lake it can get pretty humid. I looked briefly at those companies, however I will look some more. Thanks!

If your willing to spend a little more JA Baker's Iddy Biddy and Stealth patterns are very nice 3in or under blades. He can make them in a variety of steels, finishes, and handles. His prices are very reasonable and his service is tops, I have one of his S-Tac knives in M4, it is amazing.

Checkout the Knifemakers exchange here, you may find something you really like there. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome. I like the Bark River Little Creek. Carries nicely in a pocket sheath.

Do more research on Illinois laws. If you have a knife with a blade of 3" or more on you in the commission of a crime, it is a weapon. Otherwise it is up to local ordinance. I carry a 4"+ mora on my fishing bag and I'm completely legal.

You can carry a 10" blade legally if you don't use it in an offensive or (depending on the city/prosecutor) defensive manner and you don't go wandering into a Starbucks on Michigan ave.
