Hello to all

Welcome, I don't know about the SFM, all I do with my Coote and step pully set up is to run it as fast as posible that won't bog down the 1 horse motor.

Why I forge, well, partialy for perforance(some steels perform better forged), partialy to make damascus, to not be limited by the stock size(tomahawks are a good example) and as anouther knifemaker put it I could make a knife out of a barbed wire fence if I wanted to, but the real reasone is that I like taking red hot steel and makeing it move-there's an almost Zen like peace when forging.

As for the highth, I had to make a special bench just for my Coote that was a little lower than the others to make it comfortable for me while standing. You'll probably have to experiment and find what works for you.

Welcome aboard and have fun

I have a billion folders in my favorites. One folder is named forums. Then they have sub-folders. Like Auto forums, Metal Detecting forums, Knife Forums, etc. Then I have the link below saved. I click it and it takes me directly here. I never look at any of the other forums here. I should but I don't.

I wouldn't worry about belt speed that much. I ain't no maker yet, just a player so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I have a 1 1/2hp 1725rpm motor with the pulleys Norm sells with the Coote and just use fast to hog and slow it down from there. The slower I go the more I can control the grinds. I bought me a pyro-ceram platen liner from Steve Pryor right off the bat for my Coote. Never even ground any on the platen with out it. I like it. I only mentioned it because no-one else did.
