hello becker group!

I was sent here by some members of Bushcraft USA, I hope its ok to mention that. Warrior being a member there and here. Anyways I have an issue that I could use some help with. I recently bought a BK-2 used on that forum. I used it a few times no issues...until last Friday night. I went out for a short overnight outing. I was in a hurry to get a fire going before it got too dark. I was attempting to baton some oak ...it was a bit still to wet..I was using Bodark...to baton with...somehow in my haste i got the knife in a bind...big time...well somehow I broke that BK-2. Now I consider what I was doing abuse, I have given it a lot of thought...i didnt want to pop off and sound stupid, and I was wondering about warranty.

The Becker website states the warranty only covers the original owner...which of course I am not. I am ok with them not warranting the knife...just thought I would put it out there and see what you guys think.

By the way I loved that knife while I was using it...so much that I bought a bk-7 too. I see more Beckers in my future too...

Here are some pics

Hello and welcome to the forums bud.

Never seen a 2 break like that. Dang!

Sorry I can't answer your questions, but i know there are others who can. Ethan himself frequents this neck of the woods

Never hurts to ask. Ka-bar has some pretty great CS. Give them a call and tell them your story, would be my recommendation.

Give them a call or send it in, Im sure they will want to look at it.

Welcome to the forum! You'll like it here.

Great photos. Sorry about the break. From what I read here, it's a man sized job to break a Becker. +1 to hearing they have great customer service. Give them a call.

Interesting looking break. I can understand the short snap at the bottom but the way it kind of shears towards (or back from) the blade at the top is gnarly.

Sorry about your 2, but now your 7 will get more use!

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks for the replies...yeah I was a bit hard on it...I am not a small guy...and I was beating on it pretty hard.

When it's steel vs. wood, steel should always win that's what Nutn says - LOL!)... And I know Ka-Bar/Becker has great customer service and warranty, and I wouldn't be surprised if they simply replaced it for you. Please let us know how it turns out.

Btw, it probably wouldn't hurt if you mentioned that "the guys on BladeForums" recommended that I call - that way they know you'll likely be posting your CS experience....

Welcome to the land of Beckerdom.

Ka-bar is awesome with their CS. I say give it a try.

I'd like to see the piece of oak this happened with. Oak is a hardwood, and if it's particularly knotty, can really mess up even the toughest of tough tools if the tools aren't treated right.

Good luck

...I was in a hurry ...somehow in my haste i got the knife in a bind...big time...

And there's the problem. Any knife can be broken under the right (wrong) circumstances. That's just what happens when a knife gets bound up and you continue wailing on it... especially on the tang, where leverage is definitely not in your favor.
All the energy is concentrated at that one point. Something's got to give.

Maybe next time use a less sturdy baton, so that breaks first... or better yet, cut a small wedge before you start, and drive it in behind the blade as you cut into the workpiece, to prevent it getting stuck if you really need to split a tough knotty piece of wood.

Personally, I wouldn't warranty that. The Ka-Bar folks are a lot more forgiving than I am though, so it's worth a shot.

Looks like it broke right where you would expect. With the blade firmly buried in wet oak and a big stout lad pounding the handle with a dense hardwood club the area with the least metal should blow up first. I do believe any knife can be broken. Not sure how it's going to work out for you with Kabar, but welcome to the forum. Hope you hang around.

I'd have to go along with Terrio on this one, but you never know.

The baton you were using was made of "Bodark". I'm not sure but I think that's the same thing as Osage Orange.
That's kinda like using a pipe wrench as a baton, which I've done, once.
I've used my Becker knives to baton oak more times than I can count. I've gotten my 9 stuck in some pretty gnarly knots and always managed to work through them.

Good luck on your warranty question. I'd guess it's a 50/50 chance on getting a replacement. And if you like your 7 you're gonna love your 9!

I mean, you can't not have a 9. But you already knew that, right? :D

That's the first broken 2 I've ever seen. Welcome to the forum. From what I've seen on this forum, their CS is top notch. I'd give them a call and send them some pics to see what they say.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on breaking that beast :D Were you trying to knock the knife out of the log by beating upwards on the handle? Chalk it up as a great learning experience...I broke a 9 a while back through user error, Kabar gave me a new one anyway. I was amazed at the awesome customer service. Now days I use a hatchet to baton with. Either way, you should send it to Kabar, call them and explain what happened. I wouldn't expect anything out of it, but you never know.

Breaker of a bk2 is a title few can carry. I am impressed.
I also agree with everything else said in this thread.
