I registered in the bladeforums recently and this is my first post. I am not a maker but find the subject fascinating - particularly in reference to ancient and medieval metallurgy such as wootz and Toledo steel. The reason I'm posting here is because I would like to know if anyone in these forums does nitriding or shot peening on their blades and your opinions on these processes. Here is an interesting article on peening I found recently. The author claims the extraordinary qualities of Toledo swords were due to some form of peening on the blades.

I don't know if this subject has come up before in these forums (search is down for non-paying users), so I apologize if it has.

Know anyone who might wish to comment on the article in question? I would love to hear Kevin Cashen's view. I did a search for shot peening in the forums link you provided, but it seems to be considered more as an aesthetic alternative for finishing blades rather a method of improving performance.
