Take a look at my first custom knife. The blade is a old lawnmower blade that I have like 500 of them, but they are only medium carbon steel, so it will not hold a good edge. anyways see my knife. only thing left to do is polish and give it a coat of krylon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGgfUgi_niw&feature=channel_page

Now I would like to make a real fixed blade with some good steel. I was wondering if anyone had a scrap piece of steel they could give to an aspiring knife maker? Btw, Im 11(: I can make some good handle scales but I cant find a good place to get some steel around here. all I need is like 12in. by 3 or 4 inchs with a thickness of bout 3/16? I know im asking for alot but I would aprecciate if anyone had some scrap.

I see your handle is NC blademan. If you're in North Carolina I'll give you some steel to make a knife, but to get it you'll have to show up to a North Carolina Custom Knifemaker's Guild meeting with a parent. We have a meeting at the end of April at MCC in Troy NC.

It won't be 3 or 4 inches wide though, 12x4" steel isn't scrap in any maker's book ;)

Not to rain on your parade, but you are not allowed to be a member of these forums until you are 13. This is part of a law called COPPA. Scroll down to the bottom of this page (or any on the BF) and you will see this rule. It is for the protection of minors and for the protection of this forum that we all need to abide by this rule.

Before someone gets mad at me for stifling a kids dream of becoming a knifemaker, please read on.

First, get some books on knifemaking....and read them cover to cover.
Read all the stickies at the top of this forum.Lots of good info there ( you may be a good bit older before you read then all).
I would advise you to read this forum regularly. Look at the locations of the makers. There are a lot in NC. , once you have read several books, done some studying, and talked to you parents about your desire to make a knife, have them contact a maker near you about a shop visit. You can get a good head start that way. In a few years you can join this forum, and will already be two years ahead of many new makers.

Good luck, and please talk to your folks about this. Be safe, too.
Stacy
