Help a hunter, please

I need a new knife for my backpack to be used w/ big game. Love my Dozier but, could use a little more length, with age I've found the grip could be easier to hold when my hand is cold/tired/wet and most importantly I would like to leave it in my pack, something I just can't do with the dozier. Looking at Russell Deerhunter in D-2 and the Spyderco Moran in VG-10. Opinions please, are there others I should look at? Will VG-10 disappoint after D-2, which I find does indeed hold a less than perfect edge for a very long time. Also I have never let my knives corrode from neglect although I guess anything can happen.
I appreciate your time and expertice.

I use a Buck Vanguard for cleaning deer and other large game, but it's steel is nothing like D2. It has a rubberized grip that is easy on your hands. It is also a relatively cheap knife, and sharpens very well. You need to remember that D2 is not stainless (but close if I remember correctly), and that blood is very corrosive to a knife blade if left on for any length of time. All you need to do is rinse with fresh water to remove the blood, and dry. Maybe rub a small coat of oil on the blade to keep looking pristine.

Welcome to Blade Forums Easyup!

I have a Spyderco Moran drop point which is one of my favorites. The Deer Hunter is also an excellent knife (a have been meaning to get one for a while). I don’t think you will go wrong with either knife - I would try to handle each and decide for yourself how well they fit your hand.

D2 will hold an edge slightly better than VG10, and VG10 is more rust resistant.

Here is a review of the Moran (original trailing point FB01) by Dexter Ewing:

Cliff Stamp also has reviews of both the Moran and Deer Hunter on his site:

Its keeping the deer population in check, were infringing on there land and they over populating, its needed to help balance things out, deer eat the farmers crops and can ruin a harvest. Ohh and by the way, cars deer kill more yearly than hunters, think about that before you condemn hunting.

Hey WillyD, how about you do a little research on hunting and it's effects on the animal population before making ignorant comments like that. Fact is, hunting is needed to keep game populations in check. If the deer are allowed to breed and breed without harvesting game, then they overpopulate the area, they stay very small, and disease begins to run rampant in the population. That is why hunting is necessary, but you sound like you won't be changing your mind despite what you read. Go hug a tree somewhere:rolleyes:.

Have you ever eaten a hamburger, hotdog, steak, fish or foul.
Hey your gut is full of billions of bacteria they are animals to.
If any of the above are true then you have killed defenceless animals too!

I love animals, they taste great!:D Kill'em yourself or pay others, in America its your choice.

For all the fruit, vegetable and nut eatin'people in the crowd, farmers who grow and harvest these kill a lot of animals so you vegetarians can have your food also.See my wifes from a farm family, their tractors, combines etc.dig up all kinds of ground nests of birds, mice and so on,once while cutting corn this rubber blade like thing got a doe right in the head. Then theres the fact that they welcome hunters to kill as many deer as possible so the soy bean crop can go to your soy burger and not the deers stomach.I get a good kick out of that,we get 30 extra permits to kill all these deer so the soy beans can go to people who don't believe in killing animals!!:D :D

funny, Belgium is one of the world's foremost arms producer and sellers, and the largest by size and per capita ratios. Death for sale at the highest bidder, and this troll has the audacity to talk about death?

Re: killing defenseless animals

1. Unless you're a vegetatian, get off your hypocritical soapbox.

2. If you are a vegetarian, you presumably expect others to respect your values. Have the same courtesy yourself.

I applaud WillyD for making his post. I myself am a hunter. I enjoy it immensely.

You guys just can't tolerate anybody that thinks differently. I think it's so funny. This is a simple matter of disagreement, and WillyD gets referred to as being ignorant and a troll.

I'll answer WillyD's question directly.

It's exciting to actually encounter an animal in its environment, kill it (with a high powered rifle fitted with a telescopic sight), and take it home and eat it. I actually do get excited (not sexually, of course) with the "thrill of the hunt." This may not be for everyone, but I certainly would not like my right to hunt to be diminished or overly regulated to the point where it becomes impractical or illegal.

I have recently come to the realization (under this Republican administration) that our civil liberties are being threatened more and more everyday. So, I encourage everyone out there to excercise what rights we still have.

Back to the question at hand....

Easy: For hunting chores you may like the Fallkniven F1. VG10 steel, thermorun elastomer handle. About $65. I use one for skinning whitetails. www.fallkniven.com

Or maybe take a look at Swamp Rat Knives. I have a Howling Rat I've skinned several with at camp this year. Great Knife. I also
have their Bandicoot, but hadn't had a chance to use it. Looks to be a even better
skinner. All Swamp rat knives have a blade coating to cut down on rust, that may help you for keeping it in your pack. www.swamprat.com

"Hunting is not for me" is a statement of opinion.

"Hunters are immature murderers" is a statement to belittle others.

WillyD was belittling hunters with the following statement..."Why does killing a defenseless animal make some men feel big ?"

A statement like that is ignorant and trollish

No he did,uh uh he did.
Seriously I was trying to show that you don't have to be a hunter to kill defenceless animals.Hunters just eliminate the middle man and store

Actually, I'm not intolerant of other people's views, I just wish people would educate themselves before insinuating that I have an inferiority complex for wanting "to kill defenseless animals". This shows that he is intolerant of our views to the fact that he would come to a forum where a hunter has asked for advice about a knife, and throw in his pointless drivel about killing defenseless animals. He even has in his sig line "Why does killing defenseless animals make some men feel big?". He is doing nothing but trying to ruffle feathers. He has no desire to be educated about the necessity for hunting on controlling animal populations. This is why he is being treated like a troll. Not because we don't respect his views, it is because he comes to a forum where he knows there will be hunters, not to contribute to the post, but to force feed his PETA views down our throats. His comment belongs in the Whine and Cheese section, not here.

Huh. I thought people from Belgium were pretty smart, educated, and tolerant of views differing from their own (my late wife was Belgian.. and so were my in-laws, I guess). My understanding was that folks in most parts of Europe used to hunt, to feed themselves. I guess that was before Supermarkets. I'm so confused........!!! (in a Marlon Brando voice). :D :barf: STELLA!!!!
