Help a new guy out! Looking for a flipper

Most of y'all are missing the point in that he wants an assisted flipper. Best bet IMO is a ZT0770 regular or cf version. This, or the 0566 (its a more substantial knife, if you like that). Both the 0770 and the 0566 have 3.25" blades, which I know is a bit smaller than what you want.

Kershaw has quite a few assisted flippers at a budget price. The ZT0801 is unassisted but the flipper design rockets out just as fast. Its a beefy full Ti knife, but something to think about.

I was just about to say after reading the first page, can't believe nobody has suggested the 566. It and the domino are my 2 favorite edc's. As for the poster complaining about the dominos length, or lack of, it all depends on what you're going to do with it. I like the choil and the ability it gives me to do some real delicate work with the tip. The 566 is tough as nails and IMO would be a better work knife than the 801. I also think elmax is a pretty good steel, mine has held an edge great.

If it has to be an assisted flipper, I don't know what you can get at the exact blade length of 3.5". I'm sure there's something, but I don't know what it would be.

The Blur, which is a fine knife and can be had in S30V (I have one), is 3.25".

The Zero Tolerance 0350, also a fine knife (we don't recommend crappy knives here), and also 3.25".

The ZT 0300 is an amazingly nice knife, but the blade is 3.75".

The ZT 0550 is awesome and exactly 3.5", but neither a flipper nor assisted.

The ZT 0801 is also awesome (I have a couple of them) and 3.5" AND a flipper, but not assisted.

The Benchmade 940-1 is neither a flipper nor assisted, but it is close at 3.4" and it is excellent. Hard to turn down S90V.

None of the Spydercos are assisted.

Now, Kershaw has a knife, the Thermite, which looks very nice, that is a 3.5" assisted flipper that can be had for under $40. You might give that one a look. Actually, Kershaw makes a number of knives in that size that are assisted flippers. No premium steels, but not bad at all. Take a look.

Guys thanks for the continued suggestions, for now I bought the Domino and the 801. I've gone knife crazy, buying four in a week!

I would recommend that you go to a place which sells multiple knives and play with them all. They all have there individual differences. Wear the clothes you will be carrying the knife most of the time in. At work I love the 940-1 benchmade because it doesn't pull my scrubs down. When I am off work I like the heavier ZT 561 flipper with jeans or cargo pants on, but it is an aggressive scary looking blade. When I'm doing search and rescue stuff I use the benchmade 915 triage, because it doesn't look as intimidating to my patients. Most of the knives recommend in this forum are great. Go out and handle a few of them and just see which one fits u best. Good luck

I would have to say elmax is fast becoming my favorite steel. Doesn't chip or rust. The edge will roll if it gets abused and sharpening is as easy as most of the "basic" steels. It may be a tad small for you at 3 1/4 inches but the zt0566 is hard to beat for the value. It can be had for just over a hundred bucks. If you need a little bigger then the 560/561 are outstanding as well but those are not assisted. I would browse the exchange as you can find people selling knives in great condition with a good discount over retail.

Unfortunately there is no such place like that in Miami. At least that I'm aware of

My favorite flipper is my Spyderco Southard, hands down! This is in comparison to my XM-18, Curtiss F3, and ZT560. The blade steel (204P) has been just as good as any other "Super Steel" I own and the ergonomics are perfect for me. Give it a shot and if it's not for you, sell it to me (as long as it's black, I already have the tan...) Good luck bud!

Surprised nobody had mentioned the venerable and affordable skyline!
There's something to be said for a manual action flipper too....
The skyline is 40ish bucks, made in America, can go with you pretty much anywhere without getting dirty looks, comes razor sharp and easily is mirrored up to scary sharp, I'm not good at sharpening but this ones easy,
You can also spring for cf and s30v at the moment, which I did....but the g10 and 14c28n is a good option and I think many people here would agree is great bang for buck.
Third one from the top, I've bought three for friends and family:
