AUS 8 is perceived to be better, yes. My AUS8 does noticeably outperform my AUS6, but I'm not especially impressed with either. Other people don't seem to share this issue, but my AUS knives are the only ones that have a problem with chipping. But the edge retention is acceptable on AUS8.

Here is some info that may be of help in analyzing knife blade steel. Steel is less important in making a good knife in my opinion than blade design and grind, handle configuration, locking mechanism, and heat treatment of the steel.
