i recently built my forge up so i can start making my own blades. I used8 inch piping for the main body as well as a two inch inlet for my fire. i was trying to mess with the kaowool today to see how easily it would be to apply the stuff before i bought my cement for the inside. every time i applied it on the roof it'd just fall down and collapse, also the stuff breaks up pretty easily, almost like cotton candy. how do i apply this stuff without it falling when i put heavy cement on it? I was thinking of using apholstrey(spelling?) glue on it just to hold it up so i can coat it with the cement. Can anyone help me, i just used the kaowool from a store here called firebird, they sell fireplaces and pellet stoves and whatnot. thanks for all the help, i would search but i can't because i don't pay:jerkit:

To answer your question, if you're using round pipe for the forge body, then use one piece of kaowool to go all around. Then it should be self supporting.

Also, you don't need a thick coating of anything on the kaowool. Except on the bottom of the forge, if you're going to be forge welding.

Oh, and welcome to the forums. :)

When I built my forge I had to spot weld some rods 3/32" to the lid to stick the Koawool to. pushed the koa on to it and bent the pins a bit to make sure it wont fall off.

The use of rigidizer is how most folks do it. You spray/brush it on the wool (start with the forge sitting vertical to prevent the wool from slumping ) and let it dry to make the wool stiffer.

Normally I would say to go to Darren Ellis' site and you will find all the info in his FAQ's and he sells all supplies needed. His site is down again, I believe. Anybody know what is up???

Welcome to the forums.

Stacy it seems to be up and running now. Not sure what the problem was.

elliscustomknifeworks.com has a pretty good FAQ section that should help answer allot of questions. Oh, and welcome to the forum.

ok thanks for all the help guys. I'll be posting more questions as I go along here. I picked up my makeshift anvil today, a two foot section of track. thanks for all the help again
