Hey guys i was recommended to ask this question here by the folks at bladeforums. Im deciding on my 1st becker which will be either a bk7 or bk10 for when im kayaking, canoeing,or hiking. This will need to be a very versatile knife as i need to go light. It will be paired with a eco parang or something similar fir chopping and some brush clearing. I will be using it to make fires and such things.

Just buy both. Sell what you don't like (as if you won't like one). Seriously, Beckers are awesome knives. You can't go wrong. That said... I like the 10 better.

I'd get a 16 and a kydex sheath. Throwing that parang in there you don't need anymore weight and it's all you'll ever need for any task.

I would say get the 10 because it's lighter and you already have a blade for chopping so you don't need another big blade like the 7.

I prefer the BK10. The longer blade of the 7 doesn't offer any benefit to me over the shorter blade, especially when paired with something larger. I would even suggest going smaller like a BK16 if you're going to pack a large chopping blade anyway.

Don't own the 7 or 10. I would agree with what others have said about the 16 if you're going to have that parang too.

Says the man with a BK7 sigline. :D

But I'd have to agree. I'd take a BK16 over a 7 or 10.

If your not taking that parang the 7 is the way to go. Such a versatile design can do it all just fine and is surprisingly quick in the hand. Who carries only one knife anyway...get a 16.

I do plan on getting both but i will have to wait a few weeks for my pay. So my question is which one to get first.im a teenager only 15 yrs.

I've gifted both my teenage Nephews and my 11 year old son 16's and they love them. It's almost summer and a 16 would be a much better for kayaking and hiking...you won't regret the 16.

And the weeks leading up to my pay it will be used quite often and i dont want to be forced to bring extra gear.

No doubt im just shopping for my primary knives right now in case we go fishing too and cant fit a chopper in the kayak or canoe. If that were to occut which is about a 50% chance i want a versatile tool. My shopping list was
1. Bk7 or bk10
2. Schf42 as a backup
3.the bk16

Never owned a BK7, but have had a few BK10's. I sold both of them, as I didn't see what they could do that a BK2 couldn't. A BK2 is thicker, chops well, and is a drop point, which I'm a fan of. The trade off, of course, is that the BK2 weighs more.

I own both a 7 inch and a 5inch blade. They both are good starter knives but not awesome and i find that if i compare the 2 i can do fine work just as well with the 7in just as well as the 5inch. So i wanted to know peoples experiences with the 2 knives.

For kayaking, canoeing,or hiking and needing to carry light would get a 17/16/15/24/11. Choose your flavor of blade shape or size. Can't go wrong.

Of the two, I'd say go with the BK7...the height of the BK10 takes away some of the versatility you could get from a 5 inch blade.
That said, having had exposure to a number of different knives, I do find the BK7 lacking in some areas. It isn't much of a chopper, IMO; and it doesn't handle fine stuff as well as a smaller knife...but the BK10 isn't really an improvement in either regard (again, IMO).
I'd even go so far as to suggest bumping the BK16 up on your list - I think it is more useful than the BK10, and it would serve as a great second to the parang or the 7.

Then again...if you get the BK7, you could save some $$ and get an 11, 14, or 24 as your kayaking/hiking knife.

Too many decisions....
Buy'em all, and sort out the rest of the details later.

If it were for me, I'd have the bk10(or bk2) for hiking and the bk24 for canoeing/kayaking. You have a parang for chopping.

If you already have a chopper and wish to hold off on getting large Becker, the Tweeners (15,16 & 17) are the way to go. I am partial to the 16 and feel as though it is an excellent knife. Given to rumors of its being discontinued, the BK15 can be had for a bargain compared to its Tweener brothers and it sports a little more blade length. The 16 is awesome as well but I just really like the 15 and find it's blade shape to be very useful when afield and in life generally.
