Help! Broadhead steel

Seems like 3V or maybe Z-Tuff would be a really hard steel to beat for a broadhead. Spendy though. From what I can see from Larrin's testing... At similar levels of hardness, 3V is almost 3 times as tough as A2 with about 30% more edge retention. Granted... That's at around 59 - 61 hrc which is way harder than broadheads would be run. No idea how the strength and edge retention would scale at a lower hardness. Maybe Cru-Wear or Z-Wear if you valued edge retention a bit over the toughness that 3V or Z-Tuff would bring to the table?

I'd be curious to hear what @Larrin thinks an ideal steel would be for such an application.

80crv2 and 8670 would be my recommendation. I destroyed an 80crv2 blade I made to see how much punishment it could take and it held up surprisingly well.

4th African hunt for Buff & custom broadheads!!!!!!
Holy s----....say, you wouldn't consider adopting a 68 year old kid would you? :D
Dad.... :D :D ;)

(P.S. put me down for A2 also)
Lol...Well I gave him the go ahead with A2. I cant wait to get my hands on them.....I'm getting 2 practice heads the same shape and weight made as well out of cheap steel as well.

Got to ask, what about the Toxic broadheads? No idea what steel they are made out of, but the design generates a huge wound channel, so the animal bleeds out very quickly. I have seen a video of it taking out a moose, which happened real fast. But a Cape buffalo....they're bad dudes.

Toxic heads are all well and good but they definitely arent for dangerous game. All that curved steel limits penetration....and while I'm sure they are fine on lighter arrows set up for whitetail the extra heavy arrows we use(almost twice the weight of some deer hunting arrows) in combination with very high draw weights(83#) of our bows , it really exposes the weaknesses of aluminum ferrule replaceable style broadheads.

I think the A2 you designated will likely work just fine. Einstein once said "Everything should be as simple as possible, but no simpler." A good heavy two blade broadhead should be up to the challenge. Africans were using rock-tipped arrows (like everyone else) on dangerous game for thousands of years. Proper shot placement (and good running shoes in the event of a misplaced shot) are the key to success.
