Help build my sister's EDC kit

Hey. I was able to get my girlfriend to carry a photon II and a small mother of perl handled sak classic. She also carries something else that i believe is very important, a whistle on her keys. the human voice is very difficult to hear over traffic, etc. a shrill whistle is generally easy to hear and three sharp blasts is a national distress signal. (six blasts in europe). suggestions: it sounds like what people already have is pretty good. retractors are nice, they can keep stuff from getting lost while making it easily accessable, that's what i keep my photon 2 on. also webbing with a quick-disconnect is very handy, esp. for multitools. it's not really feminine but i like my leatherman crunch. the good thing is that if you can get her to carry it for a bit she will probably find herself using it all the time. like i use mine all the time, much more than i used my juice s2 when i carried it. one thing you might consider is a kydex sheath that would hold a knife, pepper spray and a flashlite that would be attahed to an outside pocket of a portfolio or leather case. it might provide quick access, although having those objects on her person would of course be preferable. arc aa/a is nice, arc ls is also handy, and of course the ubiquitous e2e (or, if there's more room, in a bag, g2z, which also won't scratch anything) knives is kind of a toss up, but a fixed blade doesn't need opening, and in a self defence situation your motor skills may be impaired. la griffe as mentioned is great, hideaway knife likewise. hope this helped in some way, i realise of course the structure is a bit scattered, but i'm tired. i did want to post my ideas, i especially think if the bag would fit it, or even in a pocket, a custom kydex sheath would be very nice for fast draw and excellent retention. please be sure to keep us posted, i would be interested both in what you decide on and how much / how it is carried

i see that you considered kydex. if the bag has a large outside pocket for documents you could maybe get something that flared at the bottom for a secure draw. if she didn't want to go with any sort of belt sheath i wonder if a pocket sheath, for the fox labs spray for example would work out well. ie it wouldn't be bouncing around in her pocket and when she pulled it out it would already be oriented correctly.

thanks for the ideas pete, she told me she will use a backpack. so I am thinking a small cell phone type pouch that can go on a shoulder strap. That would hold a light, pepper spray handy. a knife should be in her pocket or waistband...if she'll carry it....

we'll see about kydex later, but a light/spray holster with tek lok would be perfect IMO.

I have decided to go with a streamlight 2L twin task (with extra batteries). SAK tinker deluxe, and BM mini grip in her color choice. 2-3 assorted pepper spray units. All said, cheaper than a Battle Mistress or AR15, and the Secret Service said they were too busy with the upcoming elections to provide her an escort, jerks.

Oh yeah, thansk to Pete for mentioning the Hideaway series of concealable knives that Front Sight sells. Cool little knives worth checking out.

Another idea I just thought of..... how about a Bitteroot from the Simonich family? I carry mine in a Lifter belt sheath every day. GREAT little knife, totally cute and nonthreatening but also very handy. It comes with a kydex neck or keychain sheath with beaded chain but Lifter makes an awesome aftermarket sheath for it as well.

You may also want to consider the Spyderco Jester with the lime green handle. My wife said it looks "cute" and "friendly." I asked her what attributes of the Jester lead her to those positive remarks. She said both the overall small size of the knife and the color of the handle. She has used my Jester, Cricket, and Dragonfly. She is most comfortable with the Jester and Cricket because of their sizes.

Just don't present it in its box or tell her how much it costs. People tend to look rather confused and wonder where the rest of the knife went :)

Adding a whistle is an excellent idea. The Fox 40 is highly rated for noisiness, is pealess (so there's nothing to go wrong in it if it's wet), and readily available at Wally-World for about $4. I've seen the black ones in the sports area (for referees) and the blaze orange ones in boating, but you can order quite a few colors from the Fox web site http://www.fox40whistle.com/.

sounds like a good combination of stuff. the other thing i meant to but forgot to mention is the fact that most campuses have an escort service. she may feel silly using it but they are generally very nice and accomidating. other than that sounds like you've got it under control. a large tek-lock sounds like it would work well. Seriously, though, i would at the very least find out about the escort service at the school and preferably make sure she has the number.

Hey, got a few ideas for you.

Fox Labs, a trusted O.C spray manufacturer, makes a nice little keychain unit that holds 1/2 ounce of highly refined pepper spray. This unit comes in
several colors and is only about $10 or so. This spray is rated at 5.3 million SHU (norm. police stuff is 2 million). Also comes in 2,3,4 oz. stream, fog or cone patterns. Go to DefenseDevices.com + see the "paper towel test".
For a nice multi-tool, Spyderco makes the SpydeRench. It features a
locking blade knife, plier, adjustable wrench, 4 screwdriver bits, a long bit that doubles as a three sided diamond file, and a pocket clip. Take a look at it, you'll be impressed.
And for a cute girly knife, check out the Buck knives Revolution or Adrenaline, both i belive come in several colors and are not to small for defense and not to big for legal carry. Thanks for reading hope it was helpful.

I think what has been put out on the table are all excellent options. Now a word about women. I FULLY AGREE with Maximus about what will and will not be carried by the fairer sex when they are single and without kids!

Now, enter two small children. The first aid kit, hi-output light, pepper spray and leatherman BECOME essentials. The brood protecting instinct is mighty powerful, my wife has even added a 9mm Sig P-239 to her EDC when travelling to the city!
