I need another hint. What size knife would you prefer? Would a sleeve dagger or neck knife do, or are you looking for a machete size thing.

Good recs already. I just scored a Miller Bros M29 and am pretty stoked. I think it looks bad@$$, but I don't know if you could find a smaller one in the $400 range.

The SOG Special Bowie is mean looking. That's if you wanna shell out about $190 for AUS8.

I've always liked James Berhing Wraith (O1). Super mean, clean lines, really nice handle material, and right there at your price max.
 
I get it. Sometimes you just want a knife in your hand when watching Rambo. I appreciate the honesty over guys that are always saying they are spec forces or Bushcrafters and never make it out of their parents basement. My bet for u...

I don't rely on one tacticool knife, I have many. Your choice is going to depend on how long you are going to wait.

I do like the Chris Reeve Pacific and Green beret. I own the latter. You may be able to snag one of these on the Internet at a store. The wait time if you have to order is probably 4 to 6 months direct from Chris Reeve.

I just ordered a Medford Knife and Tool USMC Fighter. Like the blade shape and S35VN steel. The 2-piece interlocking Ti PVD hilt might turn you off. I'm going to tack mine on with some blue LockTite. Wait time is 6 to 12 months.

Also have the KA-BAR D2 Extreme Fighting Knife. I managed to snag one over New Years direct from KA-BAR for $99 and they list at $180. These are plentiful. D2 is a great steel.

Also have the Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed 4.84" Combo Blade, Black, Glass Filled Nylon Handle. It's affordable and a beauty!

You may also take a look at the Cold Steel Tai Pan, 3V. When I got mine I could not believe the heft. It's quite a stout knife.

I have dozens more but don't know what you like...maybe this can help to narrow it down.

I like the Benchmade Adamas fixed blade and really like the Benchmade Sibert Arvensis.

M marcinek , that mushroom knife was featured in a recent Field and Stream magazine. It's truly awesome.

M29 is good but over my budget.
 
The first thing that pops into my mind with the words “badass looking tactical fixed blade” is the Microtech Socom Alpha.
 
However my fav fixed blade is a Survive GSO 4.7. I’m a little picky with my sheaths so IMO you need to go aftermarket for that. Still attainable with a total below $400 but you’ll have to go second hand (but not necessarily used) for the blade.
 
Grayman Knives MegaPounder or West Nile Warrior might tickle your fancy.
